Elliott’s career-high 36 lead Bears to season sweep of Lakers, 87-75

OSWEGO, N.Y.—Sophomore forward Devyn Elliott (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) scored a career-high 36 points and grabbed nine rebounds as the SUNY Potsdam women's basketball team (8-14, 5-11 SUNYAC) defeated Oswego State (6-16, 2-14) 87-75 on Saturday afternoon. Freshman guard Caroline LaFountain (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga Springs) finished with 19 points and sophomore guard Dyamon Hunter (Bronx, N.Y./Thurgood Marshall Academy) had 16 and six assists. Freshman forward Jakia Howard (Syracuse, N.Y./Nottingham) notched her 11th career double-double with 12 points and 14 rebounds.

The Bears built a 6-3 advantage early and stayed just in front or even with the Lakers for over the contest's first 6:35. Oswego then edged ahead and led 21-19 after 10 minutes. Elliott had 11 points in the first quarter and Hunter scored five.

A 6-0 run on baskets from sophomore forward Alexis Davis (Brooklyn, N.Y./Williamsburg H.S. of Architecture & Design), Elliott put Potsdam back in front 24-21 with 8:53 left in the half. Oswego rebounded and the teams traded leads over the next six minutes. At 2:55, LaFountain hit two free throws to give the Bears a 38-37 edge and they never trailed again. LaFountain hit a three with seven seconds left and Potsdam took a 46-41 lead into the locker room. Elliott and Hunter added 12 and seven more points to their totals, respectively.

A 9-4 stretch to open the second half gave Potsdam a double digit, 55-45 lead capped by two free throws from Howard. The Lakers battled to get within 10, but Elliott hit a jumper to make it a 64-52 contest. The Bears led 67-58 after 30 minutes. Elliott had eight more in the third and LaFountain had six.

Hunter scored on a layup at 7:00 of the fourth quarter to give the Bears their biggest lead of the game at 74-60. Oswego answered with a final push and an 8-0 run capped by a Quincey Zimmerman 3-pointer at 4:45 made it a six-point game. Potsdam responded with a 13-7 flourish to ice the 87-75 victory.

Sydni Eure had a big day for Oswego with 30 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists. Zimmerman also had a double-double with 17 points and 10 boards and Morgan Wolanin scored 10 points and grabbed seven rebounds.
