Hawks ground Bears in season finale

POTSDAM, N.Y. – The SUNY Potsdam women's basketball team (9-15, 6-12 SUNYAC) wrapped up their 2019-20 season on Saturday afternoon, playing host to SUNY New Paltz (22-3, 17-1 SUNYAC). The Hawks jumped out in front early and never looked back, defeating the Bears by a final score of 78-55. Sophomore forward Devyn Elliott (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) and sophomore guard Dyamon Hunter (Bronx, N.Y./Thurgood Marshall Academy) each scored 10 points to lead the Bears, collecting seven and one rebound, respectfully.

Five straight New Paltz baskets to open the game would put the Hawks up 12-0 in the opening half of the first quarter. Freshman guard Tsai Lewis (Cortland, N.Y./Cortland) would get the Bears on the board with 5:23 remaining with a layup. Sophomore forward Alexis Davis (Brooklyn, N.Y./Williamsburg H.S. of Architecture & Design) would follow up with another Bears basket to cut into the New Paltz lead. New Paltz would respond, again hitting five straight baskets to close out the quarter. The Bears trailed 23-4 headed into the second quarter.

Both teams would exchange baskets to open the second stanza, with Elliott hitting a free throw and Davis sinking a jumper. Paige Niemeyer hit a 3-pointer for the Hawks, but the Bears answered immediately as freshman guard Bella Barner (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) drained a three of her own on the following possession to make it 28-10. New Paltz would extend their lead over the next few minutes, going on a 16-3 run to make it 44-13. In the final two minutes of the quarter, the Bears went on a 10-2 run as they got buckets from sophomore guard Katelyn Flanagan (Canton, N.Y./Hugh C. Williams), Lewis, Hunter, freshman guard Caroline LaFountain (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga Springs), and Barner. The run helped the Bears creep back into the game, but they trailed 46-23 at the half.

The Bears would come out of half time on the attack, going on a 9-3 run in the first four minutes to make it 49-32. Despite the Bears efforts, New Paltz would respond to the Potsdam run, going on a 16- 4 run of their own over the course of the remainder of the third quarter to take a commanding lead of 65-36 into the fourth quarter.

The Bears would show no quit in their game, as they would out score the Hawks 19-13 in the final quarter. Freshman guard Madison Soroka (Watervliet, N.Y./Watervliet), sophomore guard Lauren Martin (Akwesasne, N.Y./Salmon River), and Flanagan all hit 3-pointers, while Hunter would score 6 points in the fourth.

Lewis would finish with 8 points and eight rebounds. LaFountain and Barner each tallied 6 points. Marion Dietz would lead the Hawks with 20 points and 5 rebounds. Maddie Van Pelt would have 19 points and 4 rebounds.

The Hawks shot 39.4% from the field and 34.4% from beyond the arc. The Bears shot 42.9% from the field and 31.3% from three point range.
