No. 2 Geneseo downs Bears in SUNYAC Semis

GENESEO, N.Y. – The SUNY Potsdam men's hockey team (7-18-2) hit the road for the SUNYAC semifinals against No. 2 SUNY Geneseo (21-3-2) on Saturday night, falling by a final score of 7-0. The game marked the end of the careers of the five Potsdam seniors including forward Bryce Ferrell (Buffalo, N.Y./Buffalo Jr. Sabres), forward Vincent Guimond (Sorel-Tracy, Quebec/Gloucester Rangers), defenseman Sean Winikates (Phoenix, Ariz./Philadelphia Jr. Flyers), forward Nate Zweig (Binghamton, N.Y./Syracuse Stars) and forward Tyler Young (Massena, N.Y./Kanata Lasers).

In the opening stanza, the Bears looked to go on the offense early, but were whistled for a penalty just 32 seconds into the game. On the ensuing powerplay, the Knights were able to get on the board as Conlan Keenan beat Bears sophomore goalie Michael Paglucca (North Reading, Mass./New Hampshire Avalanche) at the 2:03 mark. Paglucca was able to deflect a pass headed to the slot, but an unlucky bounce led to Keenan gaining control of the puck all alone in front for the five-hole finish. Tyson Gilmour and Andrew Romano assisted on the goal. Just six minutes later, Geneseo doubled their lead as Tanner Salsberry passed the puck around the back of the Bears net to Brendan Miller who attempted a wraparound finish that was stopped by Paglucca, but his second jam attempt was successful putting Geneseo up 2-0. Romano picked up his second assist of the night on the play. The Bears would attempt even out play following the second Geneseo goal but would once again find themselves killing off another penalty late in the period. After getting called for a five-minute major with 3:11 left to play, the Bears needed to find a way to get out of the period only down by two. Strong penalty killing and Geneseo taking penalty of their own helped the Bears escape the period without allowing another goal.

The second period would begin with 4-on-4 action, followed by an abbreviated Geneseo powerplay to conclude the time left in the Bears five-minute major penalty. Before the penalty expired, Geneseo struck for the third time on Keenan's second of the night on a deflection in front of the Bears net. Romano picked up his third assist of the night as he fired the shot on net from the point. Chris Perna tallied the second assist on the goal. The Bears would kill off the remaining penalty time following the third Geneseo goal, but it wouldn't take long for Geneseo to get on the score board once again. Just 3:26 into the middle stanza, the Knights got their fourth goal of the night as Henry Cleghorn sent a long stretch pass from his own defensive end to Salsberry streaking into the Potsdam zone. Salsberry dished the puck off to Gordon Helmuth who cut to the middle of the ice and beat Paglucca high short side. The Geneseo offensive explosion would only continue as just over two minutes later they would strike again. Devin Brink would finish a breakaway opportunity off of a stretch pass by Brendan Miller, making it 5-0. Following the fifth Geneseo goal, Ryan Glander (Campbell Hall, N.Y./Rochester Junior Monarchs) took over in net for the Bears. The goaltending change would not slow down the Knights however, as their sixth goal of the night came just three minutes later from Dan Bosio. Brink intercepted a Potsdam D-to-D pass behind the net and deflected the puck in front to Brink for the one timer. Carson Kelley also picked up an assist on the play. The Knights would add one more goal before the conclusion of the period, as Romano buried a one-time shot off of a cross ice pass by Gilmour on the powerplay with 46 seconds left to play. The Knights would lead 7-0 at the break.

The Bears would keep the Knights off the board in the third period, allowing only 2 shots on net and registering 14 of their own but were unable to solve Aaron Mackay to break onto the score sheet.

Paglucca finished with 10 saves, while Glander compiled 9 in relief. Mackay stopped 30 shots in net for the Knights. The Bears outshot the Knights 30-26.
