Bears overpower Spartans, 15-6

POTSDAM, N.Y.—Senior captain Josh Huiatt (Lisbon, N.Y./Hugh C. Williams) had three goals and three assists as the SUNY Potsdam men's lacrosse (3-1) defeated Castleton University (0-4) 15-6 on Tuesday night. Sophomore attackman Cam Talcott (Potsdam, N.Y./Potsdam), senior defender Cole Zeller (Canton, N.Y./Hugh C. Williams) and sophomore midfielder Keenan O'Gorman (Potsdam, N.Y./Potsdam) each had two goals and an assist. Sophomore goalie Ben Fuchs (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Calvary Christian Academy) made eight saves for the win.
 
The Bears opened the contest with five straight goals over the first quarter and the first third of the second. Huiatt scored the first and third goals at 9:05 and 0:20 of the first quarter with assists from O'Gorman and junior midfielder Henry Reber (Canandaigua, N.Y./Canandaigua). Talcott scored the second goal of the game at 8:38.
 
Freshman attackman Nick Zalucky (Wynantskill, N.Y./La Salle Institute) made it 4-0 at 9:43 of the second quarter. He then set up freshman attack Peyton Walsh (Ballston Spa, N.Y./Ballston Spa) for a five-goal advantage at 6:16. Freshman attackman Jared Fontaine (Gorham, Maine/Gorham) got the Spartans on the board with 2:05 left in the half. Potsdam led 5-1 at the break.
 
The Bears outscored Castleton 5-2 in the third quarter. Freshman attackman Conner Ladabouche got Castleton within three at the 11:30 mark. Potsdam answered with a 7-1 run to put the game away. Zeller, senior attackman Tayte Murray (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) and O'Gorman scored in succession to make it 8-2 at 7:31. Huiatt assisted on O'Gorman's tally. Sophomore attackman Connor Rider (Whitby, Ontario/The Hill Academy) briefly broke up the run at 7:16, but Huiatt set up Talcott for a man-up goal at 5:11 and Talcott fed sophomore midfielder Alec Miller (Williamsville, N.Y./Williamsville South) at 2:28 and the Bears led 11-3 after 45 minutes.
 
Huiatt and O'Gorman extended the lead to 12-3 at 11:44, with Walsh assisting on O'Gorman's goal. Senior midfielder Cameron Russell (St. Alban's, Vt./BFA St. Alban's) struck for the Spartans at 10:37. Zeller answered 1:06 later and then assisted on senior midfielder Jon Jerman's (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) goal at 9:27. Two minutes later, junior midfielder Philip Dorman (New Paltz, N.Y./New Paltz) scored a man-up marker on Huiatt's final assist and Potsdam led 15-4. Rider netted the last two goals for Castleton at 6:30 and 5:29.
 
Bears freshman goalie Nate Prelewicz (Buffalo, N.Y./Clarence) made two saves and allowed two goals in the last 9:41 of the contest for his collegiate debut. Castleton junior goalie Maxx Ingison (Manchester, Vt./Burr and Burton) allowed 14 goals and made seven saves in the first 50:33. Freshman Brendan McGrath (Campbell Hall, N.Y./Washingtonville Senior) made three saves and allowed a goal in the final 9:27.
 
Potsdam faceoff specialist Luke Vitale (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield-Ludlowe) won eight faceoffs and collected six ground balls. Seniors Brandon Donovan (Erin, N.Y./Notre Dame) and Ryan Canham (Webster, N.Y./Webster Thomas) recorded five ground balls and four caused turnovers, respectively.
 
The Bears are back in action at noon on Thursday when they host Marian University (Wis.).
