POTSDAM, N.Y.—Defense ruled the day as the SUNY Potsdam women's soccer team (6-8-1) and Castleton University (6-4-4) battled to a scoreless draw on Tuesday afternoon. Bears sophomore goalie
Chloe Gordon (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse, N.Y.) made seven saves for her third career shutout.
The Spartans outshot Potsdam 6-3 in the opening half. Gordon made five stops in the first half, most coming from long shots.
Potsdam reversed the shot advantage with a 7-4 edge in the second half. The contest got increasingly physical as regulation wound down. The Bears tested Castleton junior goalie Alex Benfatti (Gloversville, N.Y./Gloversville) four times, but the Spartan turned away each chance. Gordon made a final save in the half, sending the contest to overtime.
After neither team took a shot in the first overtime period, the Spartans created the only two chances of the second overtime. Again, Gordon was on top of them, preserving the tie.
Castleton finished with a 12-10 advantage in shots, with Potsdam holding a 5-3 edge in corners. Benfatti totaled four saves in the contest for her own shutout.
