Lakers capsize Bears

OSWEGO, N.Y. – Oswego State (4-2-1, 2-2-1 NEWHL) scored three second period goals and defeated the SUNY Potsdam women's hockey team (1-4-1, 0-3-1) 5-0 on Saturday afternoon. Bears sophomore goalie Ellie Zurfluh (Aravada, Colo./Team Colorado) made 48 saves in the contest.
 
The Lakers kept Zurfluh busy throughout the contest. The goaltender turned aside 19 shots in the opening 20 minutes. At 7:38, Potsdam was called for interference and Oswego took advantage. Just 13 seconds later Morgan Shines scored the first goal of the contest.
 
The Lakers seized control of the contest in the second period. Ariella Haas struck 1:26 into the second period to make it 2-0. Oswego never took its foot off the gas. Morgan Teachout scored the Lakers' third tally at 9:00. With 1:52 remaining in the period, Mack Hull netted another power-play marker. Zurfluh had 31 saves through 40 minutes, but Potsdam trailed 4-0.
 
Zurfluh made another 17 saves during the third period. Despite her efforts, Oswego added a final marker. At 10:48, Simone Bednarik scored the Lakers' third power-play goal of the day to close the scoring at 5-0.
 
Joanna Hiebert made seven saves to earn the shutout. Oswego was 3-for-4 on the power play and the Bears were 0-for-5.
 
Potsdam is back home on Friday when the Bears host Saint Michael's College at 5 p.m.
