Bears maul Golden Knights, 90-63

POTSDAM, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam men's basketball team (1-2) got off to a red hot start and defeated Clarkson University (0-4) 90-63 on Sunday afternoon. Junior forward Brandon Segar Jr. (Jamaica, N.Y./Richmond Hill) paced the Bears with a double-double of 20 points and 11 rebounds. Sophomore guard Colton Huestis (Ticonderoga, N.Y./Ticonderoga) matched his career-high with 18 points and four boards. Freshmen Parker Kelly (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Beekmantown) and MeSean Johnson (Ogdensburg, N.Y./Ogdensburg Free Academy) each posted personal bests of 14 and 12 points, respectively. Kelly just missed a double-double with nine rebounds and Johnson contributed six assists.
 
After a difficult start to the season, the Bears took out their frustrations on the Golden Knights, outscoring them 27-3 in the opening 8:32. Kelly continued the impressive start to the his career by hitting two threes to open the game. Johnson and Segar scored four points each in the next few minutes to give Potsdam a 14-0 lead at 16:14. Graduate student forward Joe Lucas (Watertown, Conn./Taft School) hit a three to get Clarkson on the board 15 seconds later. However, the Bears answered with the next 13 points. Huestis scored seven points in a row, including a three to start the run. After Segar hit two free throws, Huestis scored on another jumper. Sophomore guards Isaac Oduro Jr. (Jamaica, N.Y./Christ the King) made it 27-3 at 11:28 with a layup. Lucas hit another three for Clarkson 14 seconds later and the Golden Knights fought to keep pace the rest of the half. With 4:20 left before the break, junior guard Reginald Smith Jr. scored to give Potsdam its biggest lead of the half at 43-15. At the buzzer, Williamson drained a three from the corner and the Bears took the 51-25 lead into the break. Huestis had 12 points in the first 20 minutes and Johnson, Segar and Kelly all contributed 10 points. Segar also had nine boards.
 
Segar opened the second half with a steal and a dunk to signal that Potsdam's momentum hadn't slowed. The slam was the beginning of a 13-0 run to start the final 20 minutes. Segar scored seven of the points and Huestis capped the stretch with a three that gave Potsdam its biggest lead of the game, 64-25, at 16:42. Clarkson whittled the lead down to 25 points with 5:02 remaining, but never got any closer as the Bears closed out the 27-point victory.
 
Williamson scored six points had three rebounds and two assists. Junior guard Reginald Smith Jr. (Chicago, Ill./Argo Community) had four points and five rebounds.
 
Junior guard Ryan Miles-Ferguson (San Mateo, Calif./San Mateo) led the Golden Knights with 13 points and six rebounds. Junior guard Blake Gearhart (Milford, Pa./Delaware Valley) scored 11 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Senior guard Chris Hulbert (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) had 10 points and junior guard Nick Budesheim (Schuylerville, N.Y./Schuylerville) added nine points and six rebounds.
 
Potsdam shot 52.3-percent from the floor and 52.4 (11-21) from beyond-the-arc. The Bears outrebounded Clarkson 51-41.
 
The win was the Bears' third straight over the Golden Knights. Potsdam leads Clarkson in the all-time series 55-24 dating back to 1968.
 
The Bears are now off until November 30, when they head to Plattsburgh State to open SUNYAC play at 7:30 p.m.
