UTICA, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam men's lacrosse team (3-3) nearly erased a six-goal, halftime deficit, but Utica College (5-1) held on for the 11-8 victory. Reigning SUNYAC Player of the Week, junior attackman
Cam Talcott (Potsdam, N.Y./Potsdam), led the Bears with two goals and two assists. Senior captain
Josh Huiatt (Lisbon, N.Y./Hugh C. Williams) and junior assistant captain
Henry Reber (Canandaigua, N.Y./Canandaigua) each had a goal and an assist and Junior midfielder
Alex Burley (Canandaigua, N.Y./Canandaigua) added a goal and two assists.
The Pioneers started quickly with two goals 44 seconds apart to grab a 2-0 lead. Dylan Dunham scored at 12:57 and Greg Fiacco at 12:13. Huiatt got the Bears on the board at 10:17, but Utica countered with markers from Chase Kaufman and John Avery for a 4-1 advantage at 7:19. Huiatt got Potsdam within 4-2 at 5:14, but again Avery answered and the Pioneers led 5-2 after one quarter.
The Bears edged Utica 8-7 in shots during the second quarter, but Pioneer goalie Jozef Korpics kept them from gaining ground with four saves. Fiacco, Dunham and Kevin Parsi found the back of the net during the period and Utica took an 8-2 lead into the break.
It was all Potsdam in the third quarter, scoring five goals to close the gap to 8-7. Reber scored with an assist from Burley at 10:14. Talcott set up Burley's goal at 5:37 and Reber's second at 1:44 before scoring his own at 0:57. Junior midfielder
Alec Miller (Williamsville, N.Y./Williamsville South) struck 38 seconds later with a helper from Reber.
Leading by just a goal entering the final 15 minutes, the Pioneers managed to stop Potsdam's rally. Kaufman netted his second at 14:04 and Dunham got his third with 8:50 left to make it 10-7. Talcott's second with an assist from Burley made it a two-goal contest at 6:38, but James Daniele gave Utica an insurance goal at 5:37 to close out the scoring at 11-8.
Bears sophomore goalie
Ben Fuchs (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Calvary Christian Academy) allowed eight goals and made five saves in the first half. Freshman
Liam O'Neil (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) was solid in relief with five saves and three goals allowed in the last 30 minutes. Korpics made 14 saves for the win.
Huiatt's three-point day gives him 143 career points (89g, 54a), moving into eighth place on the program's scoring and goals lists past Joe Losurdo '97 and Brian Austin '01, respectively.
The Bears head to SUNY New Paltz on Friday for another important SUNYAC contest at 4 p.m.
