Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Fuchs, Bears shine in 16-9 win over Clarkson

POTSDAM, N.Y.—Sophomore goalie Ben Fuchs (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Calvary Christian Academy) stopped a career-high 23 shots to lead the SUNY Potsdam men's lacrosse team (5-3) to a 16-9 win over Clarkson University (3-5) on Monday evening. Senior captain Josh Huiatt (Lisbon, N.Y./Hugh C. Williams) was just as dominant at the offensive end of the field with four goals and two assists. Juniors Alec Miller (Williamsville, N.Y./Williamsville South) (2g, 3a), Henry Reber (Canandaigua, N.Y./Canandaigua) (2g, 2a) and Alex Burley (Canandaigua, N.Y./Canandaigua) (4g) all had career days offensively as well. The victory was Potsdam's first over the Golden Knights since 2016.

Huiatt set the tone just 2:47 into the contest. The captain was unmoved by a Clarkson hit and then fired a shot past Golden Knights senior goalie Kevin Dyckman (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Walter Panas). Fuchs set up the next goal. After stonewalling Clarkson junior midfielder Billy Bergan (Potsdam, N.Y./Brewster Academy), the goalie cleared the ball himself before hitting sophomore midfielder Peyton Walsh (Ballston Spa, N.Y./Ballston Spa) in stride. Walsh then deposited the ball in the back of the net at 9:52. Just 11 seconds later, junior attackman Cam Talcott (Potsdam, N.Y./Potsdam) found Huiatt cutting to the net to make it 3-0 Bears. Sophomore attackman Christian Canino (Highlands, N.Y./Highlands) got Clarkson on the board at 8:59 with a solo effort. Potsdam countered with the final three markers of the quarter. Miller struck with a great individual effort at 7:38. He then set up Talcott at 6:03. Burley buried his first at 4:57 and the Bears led 6-1 after 15 minutes.

Miller assisted on Reber's first tally at 12:04 of the second quarter, temporarily chasing Dyckman from the net. He was replaced by junior Matt Yonko (Webster, N.Y./Webster). Bergan finally broke through for Clarkson at 10:20, but the Bears answered with two goals. Freshman attackman Cobie Cree (Akwesasne, N.Y./Salmon River) scored his first on an assist from senior assistant captain Keenan O'Gorman (Potsdam, N.Y./Potsdam) at 8:54. Burley made it 9-2 at 6:31 with a helper from Reber. Clarkson hung in the contest with goals from graduate attackman Conor Bartlett (Syracuse, N.Y./West Genesee) (5:40) and freshman midfielder Matt Reilly (North Kingstown, R.I./North Kingstown) (5:05). Reber netted his second goal with just 7.8 seconds left in the half and the Bears led 10-4 at the break.

Clarkson graduate attackman Pierce Currie (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) got the Knights within five at 13:38 of the second quarter, but Potsdam pulled away with a 6-1 run. Burley muscled his way in for his third at 6:41. Huiatt added his third at 5:35. Reilly slowed the momentum at 4:03 with his second, but the Knights still trailed 12-6. At 1:04, Reber found Huiatt in front of the goal with an over-the-shoulder pass, while taking contact. Potsdam led by seven after 45 minutes.

The goal of the game came at 11:34 of the fourth quarter. Huiatt found Cree at the left side of the net and he fired the ball behind his back to beat Dyckman and make it a 14-6 contest. With 6:15 remaining, Burley notched his fourth, while a man-up on a helper from Miller. At 5:21, Miller spun his way around a Golden Knight defender and greeted freshman goalie Brett Bohlmann (South Burlington, Vt./South Burlington) rudely with a rocket to make it 16-6. Clarkson had a final flurry with goals from sophomore midfielder Ryan Butts (Hilton, N.Y./Hilton), junior attackman Griffin Knapp (St. Alban's, Vt./Bellows Free Academy) and sophomore attackman Thomas Fiebich (Albany, N.Y./Albany Academy) in the final 2:42, but ran out of time.

Dyckman allowed 12 goals and made seven saves in 41:41. Yonko allowed three goals in 12:41 and Bohlmann allowed the final marker in 6:15.

Huiatt continues to climb the Bears scoring ranks. He is now fifth in program history in points with 158 and sixth in goals with 96.

The Bears are back in action on Friday when they host SUNYAC East first place squad Oneonta State at 4 p.m. The Red Dragons edged the Bears in Oneonta 8-6 on March 26.
