Box Score

POTSDAM, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam women's soccer team (2-1) defeated SUNY Canton (0-3) 4-1 on Tuesday night to retain the Boyd Jones Cup. Freshman forward Layla McKeiver (Endicott, N.Y./Union-Endicott), freshman forward Sarah Emmi (Huntington, N.Y./John Glenn), junior forward Makenna Crosson (East Aurora, N.Y./East Aurora) and senior defender Maeve Morrissey (Averill Park, N.Y./Averill Park) each scored for the Bears. Freshman goalkeeper Savannah Bowie (Mechanicville, N.Y./Mechanicville) finished with three saves for her second career win.

Potsdam outshot the Kangaroos 13-3 in the first half and built momentum as the period progressed. At the 16:29 mark, senior forward Mackenzie Bowie (Mechanicville, N.Y./Mechanicville) sent a cross to McKeiver at the left side of the box and she beat Canton sophomore goalie Samantha Hayes (Moriah, N.Y./Moriah) to her right. Just 31 seconds later, the Bears turned over the ball right in front of the goal and Canton senior forward Sarah Riedel (Webster, N.Y./Webster) knocked it home to tie the game. Potsdam picked up its play again after the goal took control of the game for good. At 30:32 Emmi picked up a pass from Morrissey and sent a long rocket off the crossbar and into the net for her first career goal and eventual game-winner. Six minutes later, Crosson buried the rebound off a shot from junior defender Emily Metz (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Yorktown). The Bears took the two-goal advantage into the break.

Potsdam continued to control the play in the second half. At 71:08, Mackenzie Bowie launched a corner kick into the box and Morrissey headed it home to close the scoring at 4-1.

Hayes finished with eight saves for Canton. Potsdam finished with 27-7 advantage in shots and a 13-1 edge in corners.

The Bears are now 14-0-1 against the Kangaroos all-time and 10-0-1 in Jones Cup play.

This weekend Potsdam heads to Henniker, N.H. to play in the New England College Tournament. The Bears face the host Pilgrims at 1 p.m. on Friday and Roger Williams at 11 a.m. on Saturday.
