BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The SUNY Potsdam women's basketball team (10-7,5-6 SUNYAC) defeated The College at Brockport (9-9,4-8) in a nail biter on Saturday afternoon, 53-50. Junior forward
Jakia Howard (Syracuse, N.Y./Nottingham) led the Bears with 12 points and six rebounds. Junior guard
Dyamon Hunter (Bronx, N.Y./Thurgood Marshall Academy) had 11 points, while freshman forward
Jenna Cotter (Johnson City, N.Y./Susquehanna Valley) scored a career-high 10 points. Junior guard
Madison McCormick (Heuvelton, N.Y./Heuvelton) finished with nine points and eight assists on the day.
The teams traded baskets during the opening six minutes of the contest. Sophomore guard
Bella Barner (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) hit a three at 4:03 to get the Potsdam within 11-10. The Golden Eagles finished the first quarter on an 8-3 run and led 19-13 after 10 minutes. Hunter had a three during the first and Cotter made the most of an and-one attempt.
Erin Radack hit a three to give Brockport its largest lead of the contest at 24-15 with 8:05 left in the half. Potsdam chipped away at the lead and closed the second quarter with a 15-6 run to tie the game at the break. Howard started the run and scored four points and Cotter led the team with five, including another 3-point play.
Three consecutive baskets from sophomore guard
Caroline LaFountain (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga Springs), Howard and Hunter to start the third quarter gave the Bears their first lead of the game, 37-30 at 7:08. Potsdam worked to maintain the lead and a Hunter layup at 1:10 put Potsdam up 46-36. The Bears led 46-38 after 30 minutes.
Potsdam opened the fourth quarter with a jumper from Howard and a three from McCormick for its biggest lead of the game of 51-38 with 6:39 to play. A 12-2 run from the Eagles brought them to the brink at 53-50 with 56 seconds left, but a missed three at the buzzer clinched the win for Potsdam.
Erin Nolan led Brockport with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Radack also finished with 10 points.
The Bears are back in action on Friday as they take on the Oswego Lakers at 5:30 p.m. in Oswego.
