Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

Cortland rallies past Bears, 4-1

POTSDAM, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam women's hockey team (3-10-1, 1-6-1 NEWHL) got off to a strong start, but SUNY Cortland (10-2, 6-2) rallied for a 4-1 victory on Saturday afternoon. Junior forward Alex Quinn (Potsdam, N.Y./St. Lawrence Steel) scored for the Bears and sophomore goalie Ellie Zurfluh (Aravada, Colo./Team Colorado) made 30 saves. Red Dragons graduate student captain Grace Schnorr (Camillus, N.Y./Little Caesars) had two goals and an assist.

Potsdam's strong play carried the first period. The Bears were able to generate and sustain pressure at the Cortland end of the ice and it paid off. At 10:32, senior forward Makenzie Martin (Potsdam, N.Y./Potsdam High School) won the faceoff to the right of the Red Dragons' goal. Freshman forward Sara Barrett (Tonawanda, N.Y./Niagara Jr. Purple Eagles) picked up the puck and sent it to Quinn at the right point. She moved to her left and fired through a crowd and beat screened Cortland freshman goalie Molly Goergen (Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie). The Bears outshot the Red Dragons 11-7 in the opening 20 minutes and led 1-0.

Cortland started the second period on the power play and capitalized. Just 24 seconds in, graduate student forward Katie DeVoe (Mississauga, Ontario/Vaughan Flames) tied the game on the man advantage. The goal energized the Red Dragons and they continued to press for much of the period. They went on their second power play at 7:29, but Zurfluh and the Bears' defense kept the game even. Finally at the 14:21 mark, Schnorr struck for the eventual game-winner, giving Cortland a 2-1 lead. The Red Dragons finished the period with a 10-6 advantage in shots.

Junior captain Dany Donegan (Cicero, N.Y./Syracuse Nationals) extended Cortland's lead to 3-1 1:24 into the third period. Just over two minutes later, Schnorr closed the scoring at 3:43 after finishing off an odd-man rush. The Bears evened the play after the goals, but despite a late flurry, the score remained unchanged.

Goergen finished with 26 saves for her second win of the weekend. The Red Dragons were 1-for-2 on the power play and Potsdam was 0-for-2. Cortland outshot Potsdam 34-27.

The Bears look to bounce back on Tuesday when they head to Morrisville State for a 3 p.m. conference contest.
