Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Late goal pushes Buffalo State past Potsdam, 2-1

POTSDAM, N.Y—Buffalo State (4-6-4, 1-4-1 SUNYAC) scored with 8:04 remaining to defeat the SUNY Potsdam men's soccer team (5-5-4, 0-4-3) 2-1 on Saturday afternoon. Junior forward Anderson Velasquez (Bronx, N.Y./Marble Hill) scored his ninth goal of the season for the Bears and junior goalkeeper Lucas Schiel (Bremen, Germany/Colegio Humboldt) made four saves.

Junior midfielder Moe Saif (Lackawanna, N.Y./Coppell) got the Bengals on the board at 10:29. He tipped a long pass from senior defender Hosa Omar (Lackawanna, N.Y./Lackawanna) past Schiel for the 1-0 lead. The Bears slowly shifted the momentum over the rest of the half, outshooting Buffalo State 5-4. At 40:26, the Bengals fouled Potsdam in the box and the Bears were awarded a penalty kick. Three seconds later, Velasquez buried it to tie the game at 1-1. The score remained even at the break.

Buffalo State outshot Potsdam 11-7 in the second half, though the shots on goal were even at 3 apiece. The final 45 minutes were physical and saw four yellow cards, three to the Bengals. Finally in the 83rd minute, Omar struck for the game-winner with assist from freshman forward Joseph Desmonie (Valatie, N.Y./Valatie). Neither team threatened again after the marker.

Sophomore goalie Shae Wirt (Overland Park, Kan./St. Thomas Aquinas) made five saves for the win. Buffalo State outshot the Bears 15-12, but Potsdam had four corners to the Bengals' one.

Potsdam is back in action on Wednesday, when the Bears travel to SUNY New Paltz for a 3 p.m. conference contest.
