Golden Knights defeat Bears in season finale, 2-0

POTSDAM, N.Y.—Clarkson University (9-3-3) defeated the SUNY Potsdam men's soccer team (5-8-4) 2-0 on an unseasonably warm Tuesday afternoon. Freshman goalkeeper Ian Schwartz (Amsterdam, N.Y./Broadalbin-Perth) made eight saves for the Bears in his first career start.

The Golden Knights outshot Potsdam 9-5 in the first half. The Bears tested Clarkson goalie Josh Morelli four times in the opening 45 minutes, but couldn't break through. It was the Golden Knights doing all their damage before halftime. Colin Wright found the back of the net at 21:57. At 33:20, Bobby Guilfoil closed the scoring off of a corner kick, making it 2-0.

The play was tighter in the second half, but neither team was able to capitalize again. The Bears generated the only two corner kicks of the second half.

Morelli finished with seven saves for the shutout. The Golden Knights finished with a 15-10 advantage in shots, but the Bears had six corners to Clarkson's five.

The contest marks the close of the careers of Potsdam seniors Bergen Criswell (Preston Hollow, N.Y./Greenville), Gabriel Lizana (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa), Raymond Jones (Queensbury, N.Y./Queensbury), Donny Ophals (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa) and Daniel Tietjen (Schenectady, N.Y./Guilderland).

Junior forward Anderson Velasquez (Bronx, N.Y./Marble Hill) finished the season with nine goals and three assists. His 21 points tie him with Bears Hall of Famer Jack Groff '69 for the third most in a single season in Bears history. Groff had his 21 points (9-3) in 1965. Ben Firlit '16 had 22 points on 10 goals and two assists in 2014. Bears Hall of Famer Eduardo Figueroa owns the single season record with 26 points on 12 tallies and two assists in 2012.
