UTICA, N.Y. – The SUNY Potsdam men's basketball team (1-2) trumped SUNY Poly (2-1) 84-73 Tuesday evening. Senior forward
Brandon Segar Jr. (Jamaica, N.Y./Richmond Hill) posted a season-high 24 points with seven rebounds. Junior guard
Colton Huestis (Ticonderoga, N.Y./Ticonderoga) also registered a season-high 14 points on 80% shooting from three.
The Bears got off to a slow start allowing the Wildcats to go on a 9-2 run in opening four minutes of the half. At 15:23, Huestis started a 9-4 Potsdam run when he hit his first three-pointer of the night. The Bears trailed the Wildcats 13-11. At 11:51, junior center
Chris Becker (Lake George, N.Y./Lake George) scored down low off a pass from sophomore
Jeff Williamson (Brooklyn, N.Y./Christ the King) to take their first lead of the game 17-15. Neither team was able to gain an advantage until the Wildcats broke open on a 7-0 run at 7:46 remaining in the half. The Wildcats lead 28-20. Turning up the defensive intensity, the Bears limited the Wildcats to only five points for remainder of the half. The Wildcats took a three-point lead into the break.
Early in the second half, the Bears defense continued to lock down the Wildcats. At 15:35, junior forward
Ahamadou Sillah (Bronx, N.Y./Kipp NYC College Prep) picked off a pass to start the break. While running down the court, Segar was able to maneuver his way in front his defender and make a close shot in the paint. Potsdam still trails Poly 44-38. From that point, the Bears went on a 6-0 run led by a Huestis three-pointer off an assist from sophomore guard
MeSean Johnson (Ogdensburg, N.Y./Ogdensburg Free Academy) to tie the game at 46. At 9:45, Williamson made a steal to advance the ball up the court. Moving the ball around the offense, sophomore forward
Parker Kelly (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Beekmantown) made a post feed to Williamson to put the Bears up by three. The next five minutes were tightly contested before the Bears scored 15 points in the final four minutes to put the game out of reach for the Wildcats.
Williamson registered 13 points on the night while Kelly totaled 10 points. Johnson tallied nine points and five assists to round out the Bears offense.
The Bears are back in action when they travel to St. Lawrence University on Friday, Nov. 18, for an evening matchup with the Saints at 5:30 p.m.
