Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Loran lifts Bears over Canton in overtime, 4-3

CANTON, N.Y.—Junior forward Jack Loran (Massena, N.Y./New England Wolves) scored his second goal of the game 3:15 into to overtime to give the SUNY Potsdam men's hockey team (1-5) to a 4-3 win over SUNY Canton (3-3-1) on Tuesday night. Graduate student Michael McArthur (St. Thomas, Ontario/Oswego State) and freshman forward Ryan Mahlmeister (Massapequa, N.Y./PAL Islanders) also scored for the Bears.

The Kangaroos came out fired up and took the first seven shots of the game. However, Potsdam senior goalie Stephen Friedland (West Bloomfield, N.Y./East Coast Wizards) stopped them all. Matching holding penalties at the 5:25 mark seemed to change the flow of the game. The Bears took three quick shots during four-on-four play. Roos goalie Kelson Hooper made two saves, but Loran buried the third at 5:39. The lead lasted just 52 seconds as Sam Martin finally solved Friedland to tie the score. The teams played evenly for the next few minutes and the Bears killed a penalty. They then went on the man advantage at 13:55. At 14:11, McArthur put Potsdam up 2-1. Senior defenseman Ryan Lieth (Warwick, N.Y./New York Apple Core) and Loran picked up the assists. The Bears held the one-goal lead at the first intermission.

Canton tied the game a second time early in the second period. At 3:10, Zac Sirota made it a 2-2 contest. Each team followed with unsuccessful power plays, but the Bears jumped back in front at 15:42. Mahlmeister finished a feed from freshman forward Mason Hoehn (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Richmond Generals). Potsdam led 3-2 after 40 minutes.

The Roos started the third period as energetically as they had the first two, pressuring the Bears. Again, Friedland stopped the first five shots he faced. Nic Herringer then knocked home the sixth at 7:31 to tie the game for the third time. Friedland made eight saves in the period to send the contest to overtime.

It was all Bears in the extra session, outshooting Canton 8-1. Loran ended the contest at 3:15 with assists from McArthur and graduate student assistant captain Justin Geary (Clifton Park, N.Y./Wilkes University).

Friedland completed his first Bears victory with 28 saves. Kelson Hooper made 15 saves in the first two periods and Filip Schlyter stopped 13 shots in the third and overtime before allowing the game winner.

The Bears were 1-for-4 on the power play and Canton was 0-for-4.

Potsdam is back in action on Friday night at 7 p.m. when the Bears host Buffalo State.
