Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Power play lifts Continentals over Bears

POTSDAM, N.Y.—Hamilton College (2-2) scored two power play goals in the second period to down the SUNY Potsdam men's hockey team (2-8) 4-1 on Sunday evening. Sophomore forward Garrett McArthur (London, Ontario/Markham Royals) scored for the Bears and senior goalie Connor Green (New Port Richey, Fla./Tampa Bay Juniors) made 30 saves.

Potsdam and the Continentals played end-to-end at a quick pace for much of the first period. Green and Hamilton freshman goalie Jack Grant (Fredericton, New Brunswick/Leo Hayes) were sharp on the few strong chances created. The Bears earned two power plays, but were unable to get their unit going early. Green finished the first with 12 saves to Grant's six.

McArthur got the Bears on the board at 5:35 of the second period. Graduate Student assistant captain Justin Geary (Clifton Park, N.Y./Wilkes University) muscled the puck into the neutral zone where McArthur picked it up. He skated into the Hamilton zone and fired from the left point to beat Grant, who may have been screened. Sophomore defenseman James Philpott (Calgary, Alberta/Centennial) tied the score at 11:33. As the period wound down, Potsdam got into penalty trouble. The Bears took overlapping penalties 90 seconds apart, giving Hamilton a five-on-three man advantage. Junior forward Matt Gellerman (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./South St. Paul) scored a power-play goal at 18:37 to put the Continentals up for good. Nearly 56 seconds later, senior forward Cade Groton (Ashburn, Va./Stone Bridge) added another power-play marker and Hamilton led 3-1 after 40 minutes.

Potsdam outshot the Continentals 14-11 in the third period, aided by two power-play opportunities, but struggled to close the gap. The Bears pulled Green for an extra attacker with 1:48 remaining. At 18:33, Groton fired a long shot off a Potsdam player and the puck rolled into the net for an empty-netter to close the scoring at 4-1.

Grant finished with 25 saves. Hamilton was 2-for-2 on the power play and the Bears were 0-for-4. The contest was the last of the North Country Tournament. Stonehill College won a wild 7-5 shootout over SUNY Canton in the early game.

The Bears return to action next Saturday night when they host SUNYAC and North Country rival No. 14 Plattsburgh State at 7 p.m.
