Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

Herons overcome Bears rally, 3-2

SKANEATELES, N.Y.—William Smith College (5-4-1) scored late to defeat the SUNY Potsdam women's hockey team (4-4) 3-2 on Tuesday night in Skaneateles. Senior forward Alex Quinn (Potsdam, N.Y./St. Lawrence Steel) and sophomore defenseman Sara Barrett (Tonawanda, N.Y./Niagara Jr. Purple Eagles) each scored for the Bears.

The Herons scored twice in the first period. After a few quick chances by Potsdam, Brittany Foster put William Smith up 1-0 at 5:11. The teams then traded opportunities, before Foster struck again at 10:49. Junior goaltender Ellie Zurfluh (Arvada, Colo./Team Colo.) finished with seven saves in the first 20 minutes and Herons goalie Annie Hauser made nine stops.

There was no scoring in the middle stanza. Zurfluh added eight saves to her total and Hauser turned aside all nine shots that came her way. Potsdam earned two power plays in the period, but couldn't chip away at the deficit.

The Bears rallied in the third period and outshot the Herons 19-5. Potsdam gained some momentum with an early power play, but didn't score. However, the Bears continued to roll. At 7:33, Quinn struck to close the gap to 2-1 with assists from freshman forward Rebecca Cain (Skaneateles, N.Y./Syracuse Valley Eagles) and senior forward Emily DellaNeve (Buffalo, N.Y./Buffalo Bisons). Potsdam kept pushing and Barrett tied the game at 12:38 with an unassisted tally. Unfortunately, William Smith was able to tip the ice back in its favor and scored late. The Bears were called for a hooking penalty at 16:22 and the Herons took advantage. At 18:07, Lauren Legler scored a power-play goal that proved decisive. Zurfluh was pulled with 47 seconds left, but Hauser smothered Potsdam's last chance with eight seconds to go.

Zurfluh finished with 19 saves, while Hauser stopped 35 shots. William Smith was 1-for-3 on the power play and Potsdam was 0-for-4.

The Bears return home this weekend for two games with Rivier University. They host the Knights at 7 p.m. on Friday and 1 p.m. on Saturday.
