Lakers outpace Bears, 79-60

POTSDAM, N.Y. – The SUNY Potsdam men's basketball team (3-7, 1-3 SUNYAC) bowed to Oswego State (6-2, 3-1 SUNYAC) 79-60 on Saturday evening. Senior forward Brandon Segar Jr. (Jamaica, N.Y./Richmond Hill) posted a team-high 18 points with eight rebounds.

Both teams traded baskets as neither team could gain momentum to start the opening half. The Lakers began to gain traction on the Bears at 18:04 when sophomore guard Cam Chance (Clyde, N.Y./Clyde Savannah) made a layup to give Oswego an early lead. Four minutes later at 14:40, Lakers junior guard Jeremiah Sparks (Jordan, N.Y./Jordan-Elbridge) and senior guard Devin Green (Rochester, N.Y./Bishop Kearney) each sank a three-pointer to extend the Lakers lead 14-5. With 12:58 remaining, sophomore guard MeSean Johnson (Ogdensburg, N.Y./Ogdensburg Free Academy) found Segar for a jump shot to pull the Bears back within five. A few plays later, junior guard Brian Pod (Oceanside, N.Y./Oceanside) made the trifecta off an assist from sophomore guard Jeff Williamson (Brooklyn, N.Y./Christ the King) to continue chipping away at the Lakers lead. At 8:28, junior guard Colton Huestis (Ticonderoga, N.Y./Ticonderoga) grabbed a rebound and made an outlet pass to senior guard Reginald Smith Jr. (Chicago, Ill./Argo Community) who located junior guard Isaac Oduro Jr. (Jamaica, N.Y./Christ the King) for a three to keep the Lakers lead at seven. Oswego went on a 24-7 run to end the half and take a 45-24 advantage into the break.

Starting at 16:32 in the second half, the Bears went on a 7-2 run which included a Pod three-pointer and layups from Johnson and junior forward Ahamadou Sillah (Bronx, N.Y./Kipp NYC College Prep). The Lakers continued their hot shooting from outside as sophomore guard Joey Rowback (Gloversville, N.Y.) and Green hit three-pointers to put Oswego up by 19. The Lakers outpaced Potsdam for the remainder of the half as Oswego held on to close out the victory against the Bears.

Pod ended the game with eight points while Johnson put up a well-balanced effort registering nine points, five rebounds, and three assists for Potsdam.

Green paced the Lakers with 20 points. Sophomore guard Ahkee Anderson (Greenport, N.Y./Center Moriches) and Sparks had 17 and 13 points, respectively.

The Bears close out the semester tomorrow afternoon when they host SUNY Cortland at 2 p.m.
