Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

Roos overpower Bears, 4-1

CANTON, N.Y.—SUNY Canton (9-1-1, 4-1 NEWHL) scored two third period goals to defeat the SUNY Potsdam women's hockey team (6-5, 2-4) 4-1 on Tuesday night. Freshman forward Rebecca Cain (Skaneateles, N.Y./Syracuse Valley Eagles) scored for the Bears and freshman goaltender Magalie Parent (Trois-Rivières, Quebec / Les Diablos – Cégep de Trois-Rivières) made 30 saves.

Each team had two power plays in the first period, but neither team could take advantage. At 14:21, Sydney Valiquette put the Kangaroos up 1-0. Parent had nine first period saves.

Potsdam had two man advantages in the middle 20 minutes and outshot Canton 11-8 as a result. However, Roos goalie Sirena Alvarez stopped each chance that came her way. Jayme McIlveen doubled Canton's lead at 13:31.

Three Kangaroo power plays prevented the Bears from climbing back into the contest in the third period. Just 1:33 in, Iida Laitinen made it a 3-0 game with an even-strength marker. Cain answered 3:06 later with assists from senior captain Kaylee Merrill (Wasilla, Alaska/Anchorage North Stars) and senior assistant captain Taylor Swamp (Akwesasne, N.Y./St. Lawrence Steel). At 7:42, Danika Lalonde put the game out of reach with a power-play goal and closed the scoring at 4-1.

Alvarez finished with 24 saves for the victory. The Bears were 0-for-5 on the power play and Canton went 1-for-5.

Potsdam heads to the Castleton University Invitational this Friday. The Bears face Colby College at 7 p.m. in the first round and either the host Spartans or Rivier University in the consolation or championship game on Saturday at 1 or 4 p.m.
