Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Velasquez scores twice as men’s soccer tames Fighting Tigers, 4-0

POTSDAM, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam men's soccer team (4-1-1) continued its hot start with a 4-0 victory over SUNY Cobleskill (0-6-1) on Sunday morning. Junior forward Anderson Velasquez (Bronx, N.Y./Marble Hill) scored two more goals and sophomore midfielder Logan Hinnerschietz (Mt. Sinai, N.Y./Mt. Sinai) also scored.

The pace of the contest started slowly in the rain. At 15:51, a Cobleskill defender couldn't control a long kick from the Bears. Velasquez picked his pocket and beat Fighting Tigers junior goalie John Gergen (Greenville, N.Y./Greenville) for a 1-0 lead. The Bears gained momentum as the rain slowed. At 31:47, sophomore forward Justin Mossey (Amity Harbor, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) sent a cross from the left side and Velasquez tapped it home. Then with just 33 seconds left in the half, senior defender Raymond Jones (Queensbury, N.Y./Queensbury) had a shot blocked. The ball bounded out to Hinnerschietz about 15 yards outside the box and he sent a rocket into the right corner of the net. The Bears took the 3-0 lead into the break.

Both teams worked in plenty of fresh legs in the second half. At 71:43, Potsdam hit the post on a shot. A Cobleskill defender then knocked the ball into his own net for a 4-0 lead. The Bears rolled the rest of the way, completing the four-goal win.

Junior goalkeeper Lucas Schiel (Bremen, Germany/Colegio Humboldt) earned the victory despite not facing a shot in the first half. Freshman Evan Jacobs (Binghamton, N.Y./Chenango Forks) made a save in the next 25:25 and freshman Ian Schwartz (Amsterdam, N.Y./Broadalbin-Perth) stopped a shot in the final 19:35. Gergan finished with 13 saves for the Fighting Tigers.

The Bears outshot Cobleskill 26-3 on the day and had an 8-4 advantage in corner kicks.

Potsdam opens SUNYAC play on Monday night when the Bears host 17th-ranked SUNY Cortland at 7 p.m.
