Bears trap Bobcats in home opener, 3-0

POTSDAM, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam women's volleyball team (3-1) rolled past Paul Smith's College (1-1) 3-0 on Wednesday night in its home opener. Senior captain Jessica Ader (Highland Mills, N.Y./Monroe-Woodbury) and sophomore middle hitter Santara Hart (Meridian, Idaho/Meridian) each led the Bears with five kills, while senior Abygail Olejnik (Bakersfield, Calif./Bakersfield) added four.
 
Potsdam breezed to 25-13 wins in the first and third sets and fought off a 25-20 challenge in the second set. Senior outside hitter Mikayla Myers (Gloversville, N.Y./Mayfield) contributed three kills and four digs. Senior setter Colleen Murphy (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) had 11 assists and three aces. Freshman setter Sophia Layer (Winthrop, N.Y./Potsdam) posted a team-high five aces along with nine assists and seven digs. Senior libero Marley Hawthorne (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga Springs) chipped in a team-high nine digs and had four aces. Olejnik also had three aces. Junior outside hitter Sophia Rowny (Glenville, N.Y./ Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) finished with three kills and six digs and senior outside hitter Mackenzie Fischer (Cottekill, N.Y./Rondout Valley) added five digs.
 
Junior outside hitter Alexandra Cherry (Grasonville, Md./St. Mary's) paced the Bobcats with a contest-best seven kills and a team-high nine digs. Sophomore outside hitter Jordan Louis (Navajo, N.M./Navajo Pine) had five kills and five aces. Freshman middle blocker Madeleine Rhodes (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Latin) registered four kills and a block. Junior setter Avrielle Fletcher (Ovid, N.Y./South Seneca) had 11 assists and eight digs and senior outside hitter Shannon McPheeters (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) also finished with eight digs.
 
The Bears are back in action on Friday at 3 p.m. when they host Pratt Institute in the first match of the North Country Classic.
