Golden Eagles trip up Bears, 86-59

POTSDAM, N.Y. – The SUNY Potsdam men's basketball team (6-10, 4-6 SUNYAC) bowed to The College at Brockport (15-3, 10-1 SUNYAC) by a score of 86-59 Saturday evening. Junior guard Colton Huestis (Ticonderoga, N.Y./Ticonderoga) posted 11 points to lead the Bears in the scoring category. Sophomore forward Parker Kelly (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Beekmantown) and sophomore guard Jeff Williamson (Brooklyn, N.Y./Christ the King) both had 10 points apiece.

Coming out of the gates the game was tightly contested through the first six minutes of the half. Senior guard Austin Dropkin (New Hartford, N.Y./New Hartford) made a pass to Kelly who made a turnaround jumper in the paint to put the Bears within one at the 14:04 mark. Two minutes later, senior forward Brandon Segar Jr. (Jamaica, N.Y./Richmond Hill) bullied his way down low for an easy bucket to retake the lead 14-12. Williamson and Segar scored the next four points to continue the Bears' run and extend their lead 18-12 at the midway point of the first half. The Golden Eagles countered with a 6-2 run of their own over the next three minutes. Senior forward David Grady III (Brooklyn, N.Y./Brooklyn Law and Tech) hit two free throws and a layup while sophomore guard Mekhi Beckett (Westbury, N.Y./Mepham) laid in a close shot to erase the six-point deficit and put Brockport within two with 8:19 remaining. The momentum began to shift in the favor of the Golden Eagles when Beckett sank a three to put Brockport up 24-23 at the 5:53 mark in the first. The Golden Eagles made four more layups in the final five minutes of the half to take a 36-28 advantage into the break.

Brockport continued to keep their foot on the pedal as the second half commenced. After a Golden Eagle basket to start the half, Junior guard Isaac Oduro Jr. (Jamaica, N.Y./Christ the King) scored an unassisted jumper at 18:59 to cut the Golden Eagles deficit to eight. In the following two minutes the Bears allowed Brockport to route a 9-0 run to give them the 49-30 lead. At the 13:08 mark, Potsdam clamped down on defense and managed a 6-0 run of their own to put the Bears back within 10 points. Potsdam had no answer for Brockport's red-hot shooting as Beckett nailed three consecutive shots from long distance to put the Golden Eagles up 75-55 with five minutes remaining. The scoring gap became too large for the Bears to overcome as Brockport captured the road victory.

Sophomore forward Jaylin Williamson (Amityville, N.Y./Amityville) scored a career-high eight points tonight for the Bears while junior forward Ahamadou Sillah (Bronx, N.Y./Kipp NYC College Prep) registered a career-high nine assists. Segar hauled in 11 rebounds to lead Potsdam in the rebounding category.

Beckett posted a team-best 24 points for the Golden Eagles. Sophomore guard Tony Arnold (Rochester, N.Y./Eastridge) tallied 17 points to round out the scoring for Brockport.

The Bears are scheduled to play next Friday, January 27 when they head to SUNY Cortland for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off.
