Brockport outlasts Bears, 68-58

POTSDAM, N.Y.—SUNY Brockport (9-9, 6-5 SUNYAC) held off the SUNY Potsdam women's basketball team (6-9, 4-6) 68-58 on Saturday afternoon. Senior forward Jakia Howard (Syracuse, N.Y./Nottingham) led the Bears with 15 points and eight rebounds. Senior Dyamon Hunter (Bronx, N.Y./Thurgood Marshall Academy) had 13 points and four assists.
 
The teams kept the score close for most of a competitive first quarter. A 5-0 run by the Golden Eagles on 3-pointer from freshman Stephanie Jean-Baptiste (Jersey City, N.J./John Jay) and a layup from junior forward Zairea Hannah (Rochester, N.Y./Joseph C. Wilson Magnet) gave Brockport a 13-7 seven lead at 2:56. Sophomore Mikayla Shipley (North Chili, N.Y./Churchville-Chili) quickly erased the deficit with back-to-back threes. A jumper from senior forward Mandy Barnell (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) got the Bears even at 17-17 after 10 minutes. Sophomore guard Xy'El Bradford (Syracuse, N.Y./Syracuse Academy of Science) had five points in the quarter.
 
A 3-pointer from Hunter followed by a layup, erased a four-point deficit and put Potsdam in front 24-23 at 7:45 of the second quarter. However, junior guard Hali Lucia (Unadilla, N.Y./Unatego) answered with a layup at 6:26 and Brockport closed the half on a 12-4 run. The Eagles led 35-29 at the break. Howard scored six points in the second.

The Bears hung with the Eagles in the third quarter, but Brockport managed to add to its lead. A layup from Bradford at 4:46 got Potsdam within 46-43, but the Eagles responded with an 8-3 stretch to claim a 54-46 advantage after 30 minutes. Howard and Hunter each had four more points.
 
A 4-0 burst got Potsdam with in 54-50 with 8:08 to go, but Brockport countered with a 5-0 run of its own. A 3-pointer from guard Carley Hill (Essex, Vt./Rice Memorial) followed by a Howard free throw trimmed the Eagles' lead to 62-56 at 1:43, but Brockport then closed out the win at the charity stripe.
 
Bradford finished with eight points and Shipley had seven.
 
Jean-Baptiste led all scorers with 18 points for the Eagles. Hannah recorded a double-double with 15 points and 13 rebounds and senior guard Anna Felice (Oswego, N.Y./Owego Free Academy) added 12 points.
 
Brockport outshot the Bears 47 to 37-percent from the floor and edged them on the glass 36-32. The Bears forced 20 turnovers in the contest and scored 15 points off them.
 
Potsdam heads to SUNY Cortland next Friday for a 5:30 p.m. tipoff.
