No. 4 Cards break out against Bears

POTSDAM, N.Y.—Fourth-ranked Plattsburgh State (18-2, 12-1 NEWHL) scored four goals in the second period en route to a 5-0 win over the SUNY Potsdam women's hockey team (9-10, 4-8) on Saturday afternoon. Junior goalie Ellie Zurfluh (Arvada, Colo./Team Colorado) made 49 saves for the Bears.

The Cardinals outshot the Bears 13-5 in the opening period, but the scoring chances were nearly even. Both teams had breakaways and each hit the post. However, the defenses as well as Zurfluh and graduate student goalie Ashley Davis (Winterville, N.C./Northwood School) stopped everything that came their way. The contest was scoreless after one.

Potsdam took a penalty with just seconds left in the first and Plattsburgh took advantage just 1:10 into the second. Graduate student forward Sara Krauseneck (Saginaw, Mich./Northern Cyclone) made it 1-0 with a power-play goal. Just over two minutes later, Plattsburgh went on the man advantage again. At 4:39, freshman defenseman Taya Balfour (Moorestown, N.Y./Philadelphia Jr. Flyers) doubled the lead. The score remained the same until the 10-minute mark when the Cardinals added two goals in 2:20. Senior forward Ivy Boric (Newport Beach, Calif./Anaheim Lady Ducks) knocked home a rebound at 10:00. At 12:20, sophomore forward Riley Calhoun (New Hartford, N.Y./Bishop Kearney Selects) one-timed a shot into the net from the slot. Plattsburgh led 4-0 after 40 minutes.

The Cardinals added a final marker at 5:31 of the third period. Graduate student forward Nicole Unsworth (Milwaukee, Wis./East Coast Wizards) spun around after catching a pass and fired.

Davis made 14 stops to earn the shutout. Plattsburgh was 2-for-4 on the power play and Potsdam was 0-for-2.

The Bears are back in action on Friday at 7 p.m. when they host Morrisville State.
