Spartans edge Bears in season finale, 2-0

POTSDAM, N.Y.—Castleton University (5-10-1) defeated the SUNY Potsdam women's soccer team (3-10-2) 2-0 on Tuesday afternoon in the final game of the season. Senior captain Savannah Bowie (Mechanicville, N.Y./Mechanicville) finished with eight saves.

Potsdam pressured the Spartans from the outset, but weren't rewarded for their effort. Castleton put together a flurry in the 17th minute. After Bowie stopped the first attempt, sophomore forward Maggie McKearin (Proctor, Vt./Proctor) scored on the third at 16:15. The Bears finished the first half with a 15-8 advantage in shots and Bowie had six saves, but trailed 1-0.

Potsdam started the second half with intense pressure on the Spartan's defense, outshooting them 7-1 in the first 20 minutes. Senior goalie Amaya Rogers (Fayston, Vt./Harwood Union) kept her team in front with five saves in during the span. In the 86th minute, junior forward Rylee Pepin (Windham, Maine/Windham) added an insurance marker and closed out the win.

Potsdam finished with a 27-16 advantage in shots and a 4-2 edge in corners. Rogers had 12 saves in the shutout.

The contest marked the end of the careers of seniors Bowie, midfielder Kienle Burns (Cornwall, N.Y./Cornwall) and defender Sami Dentel (Palmyra, N.Y./Palmyra-Macedon). Bowie ranks seventh in program history in wins (11) and eighth in shutouts (5).
