Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

No. 8 Knights overpower Bears

POTSDAM, N.Y.—No. 8 SUNY Geneseo (5-1, 2-1 SUNYAC) scored two power-play goals in a 4-1 win over the SUNY Potsdam men's hockey team (1-4, 0-3) on Saturday evening. Sophomore forward Mathieu Parent (Kapukasing, Ontario/Renfrew Wolves) scored for the Bears.

The first period was evenly played, with both teams creating strong scoring chances and both goalies frustrating them. A cross checking call against Potsdam with two minutes left in the period tipped the balance in the Knights' favor. Sophomore forward Alex Dameski (Oakville, Ontario/Jersey Hitmen) struck with just .02 seconds left on the clock. Geneseo led 1-0 after one.

Just over four minutes into the second period, senior defenseman Bryce DeFazio (Colorado Springs, Colo./Northern Cyclones) netted the eventual game-winner. At 4:46, 39 seconds later, Parent scored with an assist from sophomore forward Ryan Mahlmeister (Massapequa, N.Y./PAL Junior Islanders) to close to within 2-1. At 15:35, Dameski netted his second to put Geneseo back up by two. Senior forward Mitch Machlitt (Maple Grove, Minn./Army) made the most of another power play and closed the scoring at 17:54.

Like the first period, the scoreless third was tightly contested, with Geneseo outshooting Potsdam 11-10. The Bears killed two penalties in the final 20 minutes and the Knights were unable to add to their lead on a final man advantage.

Geneseo freshman goalie Jacob Torgner (Mjolby, Sweden) stopped 30 shots for the win. Bears freshman Lenny Perno (Rochester, N.Y./Richmond Generals) made 29 saves in his first collegiate start.

The Knights outshot Potsdam 33-31 and were 2-for-5 on the power play. The Bears were 0-for-2 on the man advantage.

Potsdam is back in action on Friday, when the Bears travel to No. 3 Plattsburgh State for another SUNYAC showdown.
