POTSDAM, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam men's basketball team (8-14, 6-10 SUNYAC) scored a season-high 94 points in a 94-82 victory over SUNY Fredonia (2-20, 2-14) on Saturday afternoon. Senior forward
Brandon Segar Jr. (Jamaica, N.Y./Richmond Hill) led the charge again with 24 points and eight rebounds. Sophomore forward
Parker Kelly (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Beekmantown) had a career-high 23 points along with five assists. Junior forward
Ahamadou Sillah (Bronx, N.Y./Kipp NYC College Prep) contributed 15 points and eight boards, while sophomore guard
Jeff Williamson (Brooklyn, N.Y./Christ the King) added 14 points.
The first half was tightly contested. There were seven lead changes and five ties. Neither team led by more than four points until Kelly scored on a layup at 6:26 to break a 24-24 tie and ignite a 10-2 run. Williamson scored at 2:57 to put the Bears up 36-26. Fredonia countered with an 8-0 run and the gap was trimmed to 36-34 at 1:15. A three-point play from Segar and a buzzer-beating 3-pointer from Kelly gave the Bears a 42-36 lead at the break. Kelly led Potsdam with 14 points in the first half and Segar scored 11.
The Bears started the second half with an 18-4 run as their lead ballooned to 60-40 at 15:32. Kelly was a catalyst with five points, while Segar and sophomore guard
MeSean Johnson (Ogdensburg, N.Y./Ogdensburg Free Academy) each had four in the stretch. Fredonia battled back into single digits with a 22-9 answer and were down just 69-62 with 7:22 remaining. The scare got the Bears going again and they countered with a 10-2 stretch to regain a comfortable 79-64 lead at 4:42, punctuated with a Segar dunk. Fredonia never got closer than 10 points again as time ran out.
Junior guard AJ Knight (Rockville Centre, N.Y./Holy Trinity Diocesan) led Fredonia with 22 points. Senior forward Jacob Hougan (Chardon, Ohio/Chardon) scored 13 to go with six boards and six assists. Sophomore guard Aaron Collins (Erie, Pa./Erie First Christian Academy) and junior guard My'Kell Kaigler (Liverpool, N.Y./Bishop Ludden) each scored 12.
Potsdam shot a scorching 53.7-percent from the floor and the Blue Devils also shot well at 45.3-percent. The Bears edged Fredonia 40-37 on the glass.
The Bears wrap up the regular season at home next weekend. SUNY Oneonta comes to Jerry Welsh Gymnasium at 7:30 on Friday and SUNY New Paltz at 4 p.m. on Saturday.
