Mustangs muscle past Bears on Senior Night

POTSDAM, N.Y.—Morrisville State (8-17, 4-12 SUNYAC) scored five goals in a wild second period en route to an 8-5 win over the SUNY Potsdam men's hockey team (5-19-1, 3-13) in the season finale. Five different Bears scored in the contest.

The first period showed little signs of what was to come. Potsdam outshot the Mustangs 9-6. Freshman forward Ryan Mahlmeister (Massapequa, N.Y./PAL Islanders) opened the scoring at 3:51 with assists from junior forward Jack Loran (Massena, N.Y./New England Wolves) and senior defenseman Ryan Lieth (Warwick, N.Y./New York Apple Core). Sophomore forward Curtis Abbott (Belmont, Ontario/Brantford 99ers) tied the game at 14:53 and the score was unchanged after 20 minutes.

There was a lot of offense in the second period and not much defense. The teams combined for eight goals and five in the first 6:44. Sophomore forward Trevor Neumann (Burlington, Ontario/Therold Blackhawks) put Morrisville up 2-1 with a power-play goal just 50 second in to the period. At 2:04, senior forward Justin Vernace (Mississauga, Ontario/Brampton Admirals) tied the game with a shorthanded goal on an assist from freshman forward Mason Hoehn (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Richmond Generals). Just 36 seconds later, Mustangs sophomore defenseman Benjamin Lindberg (East Aurora, N.Y./Stouffville Spirit) made it 3-2. Hoehn tied the game with another power-play marker at 3:59 with assists from freshman forward Jeremy Quesnel (Alexandria, Ontario/Hawkesbury Hawks) and Lieth. At 6:44, graduate student forward Michael McArthur (St. Thomas, Ontario/Oswego State) put the Bears up 4-3 with assists from Lieth and freshman defenseman Michael Campbell (Toronto, Ontario/Jersey Whalers). Neumann tied the game at 4-4 with his second goal at 9:57 and sophomore forward Cameron Clark (Daytona Beach, Fla./Buffalo Regals) put the Mustangs up for good at 11:41. With just over 13 seconds left, sophomore forward Matteo DiBlasio (Toronto Ontario/Toronto Jr. Canadians) scored and Morrisville led 6-4 after 40 minutes.

Sophomore forward Jonas Leas (North Vancouver, British Columbia/Elmira College) made it a three-goal game at 5:38 of the third period and junior defenseman Steven Ford (Dallas, Texas/Skylands Kings) turned a turnover into Morrisville's eighth and final goal of the night. Graduate student Justin Geary (Clifton Park, N.Y./Wilkes University) scored a power-play goal for the Bears at 16:47 to close out the scoring for the night.

Senior goalie Connor Green (New Port Richey, Fla./Tampa Bay Juniors) made 14 saves and allowed four goals in the first 30:05 for the Bears. Senior goalie Stephen Friedland (West Bloomfield, Mich./East Coast Wizards) made 16 saves and allowed four goals in the final 29:55.
