Lakers sink Bears in NEWHL contest

POTSDAM, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam women's hockey team (10-11, 5-9 NEWHL) faced off against Oswego State (13–9-1, 10-5-1 NEWHL) on Saturday afternoon at Maxcy Hall Ice Arena. The Lakers struck twice in the first and second periods and once in the third to win a 5-0 decision.

Oswego State got the scoring going with just over seven minutes played in the first period with an even-strength goal from sophomore forward Simone Bednarik (Elmhurst, Ill./ HC SKP Bratislava). Oswego found the back of the net five minutes later for the second goal of the period from senior center Ariella Haas (Albany, N.Y./Elmira College). Bears junior netminder Ellie Zurfluh (Arvada, Colo. / Team Colorado) stopped 14 shots in the first.

In the second period, the Bears had a power-play opportunity early via a body-checking penalty from Laker sophomore Rylee Preston (Lake Placid, N.Y./Syracuse Valley Eagles). Despite multiple scoring opportunities, the Lakers fended off the Bears before a five-minute major was handed out to Potsdam. The Lakers netted two goals on this power play, making the score 4-0, with goals from Haas (5:22) and senior defenseman Amanda Zenstein (Chalfont, Pa./Elmira College) 6:07 into the second. The Bears outshot the Lakers 11-9 in the second period.

In period three, Bears freshman goaltender Madelyn Adamic (Mentor, Ohio/Washington Pride) replaced Zurfluh between the pipes. Adamic stopped four of five shots. Laker junior forward Rachel Corbett (Rochester, N.Y./Buffalo Regals) was the only player to beat Adamic, 14:09 into the period with an even-strength goal. The Bears outshot the Lakers for the second consecutive period with totals of 8-5.

The game concluded with a 5-0 final, giving Oswego State the NEWHL Conference series win over the Bears. The Lakers were 2-for-7 on the power play and Potsdam was 0-for-6.

The Bears face off against Buffalo State in their final home game of the season on Friday February 10. The contest takes place Bear Pride Night and it is also Senior Night for the team.
