CORTLAND, N.Y.—SUNY Cortland (6-3, 1-1 SUNYAC) used a big second quarter to defeat the SUNY Potsdam men's lacrosse team (5-4, 0-2) 16-8 on Saturday afternoon. Sophomore attackman
Owen Walsh (Ballston Spa, N.Y./Ballston Spa) scored three goals for the Bears. Senior captain
Peyton Walsh (Ballston Spa, N.Y./Ballston Spa) had a goal and two assists and senior captain
Ayden LaFave (Philadelphia, N.Y./Indian River) added three assists.
Peyton Walsh scored the first goal of the game at 10:52 and
Owen Walsh closed the first quarter with a man-up goal on a helper from LaFave at 3:20 and the Bears led 2-1 after 15 minutes.
The Red Dragons scored six unanswered goals in the second quarter to enter the break up 7-2. Troy Morris and Jason Chiodo each had two goals for Cortland.
Dante Yacavone, Tyler Starrett and Caden Yancey each scored to extend Cortland's run to 9-0 and the Red Dragons led 10-2 at 11:43 of the third quarter. The Bears scored three of the next six goals and were down 13-5 after 45 minutes.

Drew Rose (Brasher Falls, N.Y./St. Lawrence Central) followed with two man-up goals at 10:18 and 0:33. LaFave assisted on each.
Owen Walsh scored two of the first three goals in the fourth quarter at 12:15 and 9:53 to get Potsdam within 14-7. After two more Cortland tallies, Strader finished a feed from
Peyton Walsh to close the scoring with 12 seconds left.
Junior goalie
Liam O'Neil (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) made 15 saves for the Bears. Travis Wagner also made 15 stops for Cortland in the first 48:54 while allowing six goals to earn the win. Matt Stento made a save and allowed a goal in the next 7:04 and Nick Mathes did the same in the final 4:02.
Sophomore defender
Cole Slavin (Corning, N.Y./Corning-Painted Post) had five ground balls and two caused turnovers for Potsdam.
Yacavone finished with five points on three goals and two assists to lead Cortland. Yancey had two goals and two assists.
The Bears are back in action on Wednesday, when they travel to SUNY Poly for a 7 p.m. contest.
