POTSDAM, N.Y.—The fourth-seeded SUNY Potsdam men's volleyball team (17-14) swept fifth-seeded SUNY Poly (9-15) on Tuesday night in the New England Collegiate Conference Quarterfinals. The win was the first playoff victory in the program's three seasons. Two-time first team All-NECC outside hitter
Joe Zimmerman (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) led the Bears with 12 kills and nine digs.
As was the case in the teams' Saturday meeting, each set was tightly contested. Potsdam took the sets 25-23, 25-20 and 25-23. Junior middle hitter
Jason Hendler (East Meadow, N.Y./East Meadow) had nine kills and freshman outside hitter
Duncan Tenhagen (Buffalo, N.Y./West Seneca West) added six kills and two aces. Graduate student setter
Cooper Colesante (Central Square , N.Y./Paul V. Moore) tied a match-high with 31 assists and recorded four blocks and an ace. Senior outside hitter
Zaire Rogers (Cheektowaga, N.Y./Cheektowaga) had eight digs and junior libero
Tom Shemik (Grand Island, N.Y./Grand Island) registered five digs and an assist.
Freshman outside hitter Peter Gottler (Buffalo, N.Y../St. Joseph's Collegiate Academy) led SUNY Poly with nine kills. Sophomore outside hitter Jason Aubrey (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) recorded eight kills, five digs, an ace and a block. Junior middle blocker James Mion (Burnt Hills, N.Y./Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) also had eight. Junior middle blocker Jordan Weir (Laurens, N.Y./Laurens) contributed three aces and two blocks. Senior defensive specialist Jacob Wicher (Orchard Park, N.Y./Hamburg) had eight digs and two assists. Senior setter Nathan Farnham (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield) rounded out the leaders with 31 assists and seven digs.
The Bears now head to top-seeded Endicott College for a 7 p.m. semifinal showdown on Thursday in Beverly, Mass.
