COBLESKILL, N.Y. – The SUNY Potsdam softball team (4-16) split a twin bill against SUNY Cobleskill (4-17) on Thursday evening. The Fighting Tigers won game one 10-6 and the Bears took the second game 10-4.
In game one, Emily Lutz hit an RBI double in the bottom of the first inning to plate Olivia DeMott and put Cobleskill up early. DeMott then quickly turned around the following inning and hit a triple to score Deanna Palmer.
The Fighting Tigers tacked on two more runs in the third inning. Mackenzie Wendelken brought home Lutz off a double to center field. Wendelken then scored off an RBI double to right field from Abigail Scheurich as Cobleskill leads the Bears 4-0.
With bases loaded in the bottom of the fourth, Wendelken doubled for her second hit of the game, driving in three more runs for the Fighting Tigers. Cobleskill registered five hits in those two innings.
The Bears broke the game open in the top of the fifth, tallying five runs on six hits in the inning. Sophomore second baseman

Danielle Moscarello (Arlington, Vt./Mount Anthony Union) on a base hit to give Potsdam their first run of the game. Sophomore shortstop
Kaylee Dobransky (New Britain, Conn./CREC Academy of Science and Innovation) earned two RBIs batting in Lovejoy and sophomore pinch runner
Lexie Cottrill (Skaneateles, N.Y./Skaneateles) off a triple to center field. On the next at bat, Dobransky made it home when senior first baseman
Anna Grottola (Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Connetquot) doubled to right field. Junior catcher
Alexa Abbatantuono (Corinth, N.Y./Corinth) then doubled to center field to plate Grottola for Potsdam's fifth run of the inning. Cobleskill scored one run in the bottom of the fifth off an RBI single from DeMott to put the Fighting Tigers up 8-5.
In the sixth inning, Cobleskill scored two runs off a passed ball and a wild pitch. Potsdam countered in the seventh with Moscarello driving in junior designated player
Kelsey Bennett (Hammond, N.Y./Hammond). The Bears couldn't keep the momentum rolling as they fell to the Fighting Tigers 10-6 in the opening game of the doubleheader.
Senior pitcher
Chesnie York (Corinth, N.Y./Corinth) (3-5) allowed eight runs, four earned, on 10 hits for the Bears. Graduate student
Sierra Ashley (Ogdensburg, N.Y./Lisbon) pitched one inning, allowing two runs on two hits. Marrisa Wheeler (4-6) went the distance for the Fighting Tigers. She allowed six runs, five earned, on 11 hits in the win.
Abbatantuono went 2-2 with an RBI for the Bears. Grottola went 2-3 with a run, RBI, and a walk. Moscarello finished 2-4 with a run and RBI. Dobransky went 1-3 with a run and two RBIs. Lutz went 3-4 with three runs and an RBI for the Fighting Tigers. DeMott finished 2-4 with two runs and two RBIs.
Like the opening game, the second of the doubleheader proved to be a high scoring affair. The Bears got off to a hot start in the top of the first, scoring six runs on six hits. Bennett got up to the plate and scored Grottola and Dobransky off a two-run single to get the Bears on the board. Sophomore third baseman
Rebecca Holmes (Lawtons, N.Y./North Collins) then reached home on an error from the centerfielder, putting the Bears up 3-0 early. Junior designated player
Kat Tompkins (Pleasant Valley, N.Y./Arlington) plated Bennett with an RBI single. Moscarello scored on the following at-bat when Tompkins got caught stealing. York then registered her first triple of the season, plating junior pitcher
Anna Brown (Ellenburg Depot, N.Y./Northern Adirondack). The Fighting Tigers countered by scoring two runs of their own in the bottom of the first, but the Bears still held a comfortable 6-2 lead heading into the second.
Both teams scored a run in the second inning. Dobransky advanced on a single from Grottola, and then scored on an error by the shortstop. Lutz then reached on an error by first base, which allowed EmmaRae Easton to score.
The third and fourth innings were all Potsdam. Lovejoy enjoyed her first triple of the season, plating York, and Moscarello in the top of the third. Grottola then scored when Holmes got caught stealing in the fourth. The Bears now lead the Fighting Tigers 10-3. Cobleskill secured one more run in the bottom of the fifth but couldn't keep it going as Potsdam rolled past Cobleskill for the road victory.
Brown (1-5) pitched four innings for the Bears, allowing nine runs, five earned, on 11 hits to earn the win on the mound. Cottrill pitched the other three innings for Potsdam, only allowing one run on six hits to earn the save. DeMott (0-3) pitched 2.2 innings and allowed nine runs, five earned on 11 hits. Kimberly Olsen pitched the remainder of the game, allowing one run on three hits.
York went a perfect 3-3 with a run and RBI. Dobransky went 2-3 with two runs. Grottola had another strong showing for the Bears, finishing 2-4 with two runs. Both Lovejoy and Bennett tallied two RBIs for Potsdam. Wendelken went 3-4 for the Fighting Tigers. DeMott went 2-4 with a run while Easton also finished 2-4 with a run and two RBIs.
The Bears are back in action on Saturday when they host Plattsburgh State for a doubleheader starting at noon.
