GENESEO, N.Y. – The SUNY Potsdam softball team (6-28, 2-14 SUNYAC) dropped a pair of games to SUNY Geneseo (21-16-1, 12-6) Saturday afternoon. The Knights were victorious over the Bears in game one 8-0 and game two by a score of 14-4.
Geneseo got off to quick start, scoring four runs in the opening two innings. Two of those runs coming off a homer from Leah VanDerwarker. The Knights went on to score four more runs through the next three innings to capture the game one victory.
Sophomore pitcher
Lexie Cottrill (Skaneateles, N.Y./Skaneateles) (2-10) allowed eight earned runs on 10 hits in four innings. Elizabeth Eberhardt (11-2) earned the win for the Knights, limiting the Bears to two hits in five innings, while striking out six.
Sophomore third baseman
Rebecca Holmes (Lawtons, N.Y./North Collins) and Cottrill each recorded a hit for the Bears.
Kaitlyn Schmitz went 3-3 with two runs and an RBI for Geneseo.
In game two, Geneseo plated three runs in the bottom of the first to take the early 3-0 lead over the Bears. Samantha Martz scored two runners on a double to left center field and Brooke Fraas made it home on a ground out to the pitcher.
Potsdam got on the board in the top of the second when junior pitcher
Anna Brown (Ellenburg Depot, N.Y./Northern Adirondack) hit an RBI single to left center field, plating Holmes to make it a 3-1 score. Geneseo then countered with six runs in the bottom of the second to put the Knights up 9-1 going into the third.
The Bears scored three runs on four hits in the top of the third to cut the Geneseo lead 9-4. Sophomore shortstop
Kaylee Dobransky (New Britain, Conn./CREC Academy of Science and Innovation) plated sophomore second baseman
Kiara Lovejoy (Lansing, N.Y./Lansing) on a double to left field. Junior catcher
Alexa Abbatantuono (Corinth, N.Y./Corinth) then drove in Dobransky on base hit up the middle. Potsdam's fourth run came when Abbatantuono scored on a wild pitch. Geneseo answered with two more runs in the bottom of the third. VanDerwarker scored on an error by the shortstop and Schmitz rounded home on a double to center field from Martz to extend the Knights lead 11-4.
Geneseo managed two more runs in the bottom of the fourth. Haley Coombs came home on a wild pitch and Schmitz plated Iris Kahris on a double to right field. The Knights held off the Bears in the fifth inning to seal the 14-4 victory at home.
Brown (1-10) started for the Bears, allowing nine earned runs on five hits. Graduate student
Sierra Ashley (Ogdensburg, N.Y./Lisbon) pitched two innings, allowing five earned runs on four hits. Senior
Chesnie York (Corinth, N.Y./Corinth) did not allow a hit for the remainder of the game. Mattie Woodard (3-5) earned the win for Geneseo, allowing four runs, three earned, on five hits in the first two innings. Sydney Bolton relieved Woodard and didn't give up a run in the following two innings.
Dobransky went 1-3 with a run and an RBI while Abbatantuono also finished 1-3 with a run and RBI. Sophomore outfielder
Danielle Moscarello (Arlington, Vt./Mount Anthony Union) went 1-2 and Lovejoy went 1-2 with a run.
Schmitz went 1-3 with two runs and four RBIs for the Knights. Martz went 2-4 with a run and three RBIs to round out the leaders.
The Bears are back in action tomorrow against SUNY Brockport for their final contests of the season starting at noon.
