Bears fall to Gators, Cardinals on final day of Cardinal Classic

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam women's volleyball team (1-2) fell to Russell Sage College (2-1) and Plattsburgh State (3-0) on the last day of the Cardinal Classic. Potsdam fell in four sets against Russell Sage (1-3, 22-25, 19-25, 26-24, 20-25) and Plattsburgh (25-22, 16-25, 18-25, 21-25). 
  
Against the Gators, Potsdam fell in the first two sets 25-22 and 25-19 before winning the third 26-24. Russell Sage came back in the fourth 25-20 to win the match. Junior opposite Alyssa Adams (Jamestown, N.Y./Randolph) led the Bears with 19 kills, one block, while junior outside hitter Megan Henry (Candor, N.Y./Candor) registered eight kills and one block against. Sophomore setter Sophia Layer (Potsdam, N.Y./Potsdam) finished the match with 20 assists and freshman outside hitter Emily Prest (Averill Park, N.Y./Averill Park) collected 15 digs for the Bears. 
 
Caitlin Hammecker paced the Gators with 17 kills, three aces, two blocks, and two assists. Emma Freidel had 35 Assists and Elaina Moisidis had 20 digs for the Gators. 
  
The Bears won the first set and then fell in the last three sets against the host Cardinals. Adams again had a match-high for the Bears with 10 kills, three aces, and 10 digs. Layer had 14 assists and four aces while senior opposite Kendall Jones (Parker, Colo./Elizabeth) led the Bears with 14 digs.  
  
For the Cardinals, Lidya Girma led the way with 16 kills and 15 digs. Emma Rivers had 24 assists and Payton Zophy had 21 digs for the Cardinals. 
  
The Bears are back in action on Saturday, September 9, as they head to Hamburg, N.Y. to face Hilbert at 12 p.m.
