Golden Eagles ground Bears, 70-60

BROCKPORT, N.Y.—SUNY Brockport (9-9, 5-6 SUNYAC) defeated the SUNY Potsdam women's basketball team (6-10, 2-8) 70-60 on Friday evening. Junior guard Carley Hill (Essex, Vt./Rice Memorial) scored a career-high 16 points for the Bears. Graduate student forward Jakia Howard (Syracuse, N.Y./Nottingham) matched her, while also grabbing a game-high 15 rebounds for her 11th double-double of the season. Howard now has 1089 points for her career as well as 715 boards.
 
The teams matched each other in the first quarter until the final few minutes. Potsdam continued to pull just in front of the Golden Eagles until just under five minutes remained. Hill hit at three to give the Bears a 10-8 lead at 4:40. Brockport answered with a 6-0 run and led 14-10 after 10 minutes. Junior guard Xy'El Bradford (Syracuse, N.Y./Syracuse Academy of Science) also hit a three in the first.
 
The Eagles opened the second quarter on a 10-2 run to grab a 24-12 lead at 5:00. Potsdam edged the hosts 7-5 over the rest of the half and trailed 29-19 at the break. Junior forward Jenna Cotter (Johnson City, N.Y./Susquehanna) had four points during the quarter.
 
Zoe Zutes hit a three to start the third quarter and give Brockport a 32-19 lead. The Bears answered with a 10-4 run, capped by another Hill 3-pointer, and closed the gap to 34-29 at 7:13. The Eagles extended their lead again and kept it to around eight or nine points for the rest of the quarter. Brockport was up 48-39 through 30 minutes. Hill scored nine points in the third, all from long range. Junior guard Mikayla Shipley chipped in four points.
 
A 6-2 start to the fourth got the Bears within 50-45 at 6:15 on a jumper from Hill. However, Brockport immediately answered with two threes from Anna Lee and a layup from Stephanie Jean-Baptiste and the Eagles were back up 58-45 with 4:51 left. Bradford led a final charge for the Bears. After Howard scored on a layup, Bradford followed with another and a three. Potsdam was down 58-52 at 3:40. After the lead hovered around six over the next few minutes another Jean-Baptiste three made it a nine-point game again. Brockport then sealed the outcome from the free-throw line.
 
Bradford finished with 12 points and Cotter added 10 points, four rebounds, three assists and two blocks.
 
Lee and Jean-Baptiste each scored 15 points to lead the Golden Eagles. Zairea Hannah had 13 points and eight rebounds and Zutes posted 11 points.
 
The Bears are back in action tomorrow afternoon at SUNY Geneseo at 2 p.m.
