GENESEO, N.Y.—Fourth-ranked SUNY Geneseo (15-4, 8-2 SUNYAC) defeated the SUNY Potsdam men's hockey team (6-13-1, 3-8) 6-1 on Saturday evening. Sophomore assistant captain
Mason Hoehn (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Richmond Generals) scored for the Bears.
The Knights struck three times in the first period, outshooting Potsdam 19-13. The three goals came in a 1:37 span. Alex Dameski scored on the power play to make it 1-0 at the 10:18 mark. Zach Rehbaum doubled the lead at 11:40. Just 15 seconds later Teddy Purcell made it 3-0 Geneseo.
The Bears battled back in the second period. Hoehn made it 3-1 44 seconds into the middle stanza. Sophomore forward
Ryan Mahlmeister (Massapequa, N.Y./PAL Islanders) had the assist. Potsdam outshot the hosts 10-9 and each team had an unsuccessful power play in the second.
Penalty trouble hurt the Bears in the third period. Alex Wilkins scored at 12:01 to re-establish Geneseo's three-goal advantage. The Knights then took advantage of a 5-on-3 power play over the next few minutes. Purcell netted his second of the game at 14:40 and Andrew Bruno closed the scoring 46 seconds later.
Potsdam junior goalie
John Werber (Skillman, N.J./Team Maryland) made 46 saves. Geneseo's Adam Harris stopped 34 shots for the win. The Bears were 0-for-3 on the power play and the Knights finished 3-for-9.
The Bears are back in action next Saturday, when they host North Country rival SUNY Plattsburgh at 7 p.m.
