CANTON, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam women's soccer team (3-9, 1-3 SUNYAC) scored twice in each half to defeat SUNY Canton (1-9-2, 0-4) 4-1 on Wednesday night. The meeting was 18th in the all-time series, but just the first as SUNYAC rivals. The game was also the 13th annual Boyd Jones Cup, named for the former sports information director who worked for both schools.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Senior forward Julia Tycott (Monroe, N.Y./Monroe-Woodbury) opened the scoring at 15:39.
- The Kangaroos got even at 41:20 as a misplay off a corner kick ended in an own goal against the Bears.
- Potsdam responded just 2:33 later with a goal from senior forward Hailey von Ahn (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga Springs) to give the Bears a 2-1 lead at the half.
- von Ahn buried a rebound off a shot by senior midfielder Sarah Emmi (Huntington, N.Y./Elwood-John Glenn) to make it 3-1 at 54:54.
- Tycott added her second at 55:32 with a helper from sophomore forward Adrianna Orlando (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) for a three-goal lead.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Sophomore goalie Caroline Vines (Irondequoit, N.Y./Irondequoit) made four saves for her third career victory.
- Canton keeper Skylar Williams finished with 16 stops.
- The Bears outshot the Kangaroos 32-8 and had a 10-3 advantage in corners.
- Potsdam is now 17-0-1 against Canton dating back to 1987 and 12-0-1 in Boyd Jones Cup contests.
