Bears rally for critical five-set win over Oneonta

POTSDAM, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam women's volleyball team (12-8, 4-4 SUNYAC) trailed by a set twice before rallying for a 3-2 win over SUNY Oneonta (8-17, 1-7) on Friday night.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The first set was even until the 26-24 final score in Oneonta's favor. Senior captain Megan Henry (Candor, N.Y./Candor) had four kills for the Bears, while senior outside hitter Alyssa Adams (Jamestown, N.Y./Randolph) added three.
  • Potsdam bounced back for a 25-16 win in set two. Henry registered another five kills in the set and Adams had four.
  • The pattern continued in set three with the Red Dragons claiming a 25-16 win. Adams contributed five more kills in the third stanza.
  • The Bears rallied again to force a fifth set with a 25-23 win in set four. Henry recorded another five kills and sophomore Emily Prest (Averill Park, N.Y./Averill Park) had three.
  • Potsdam opened the fifth set on a 6-1 run, sparked by three consecutive aces from junior setter Sophia Layer (Potsdam, N.Y./Potsdam). Oneonta answered with a 10-5 stretch to tie the game at 11 apiece. The Red Dragons rallied again to tie the game at 14-14 before the Bears finally claimed the 16-14 win and the 3-2 match victory. Henry had a final four kills including the game-winner.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Henry matched a career-high with 21 kills to go with 18 digs.
  • Adams had 15 kills and a personal-best 21 digs along with two blocks.
  • Prest added 11 kills, 14 digs and four aces.
  • Layer finished with a career-high 48 assists, 14 digs and two aces.
  • Sophomore setter Rachel Madore (Peru, N.Y./Peru) chipped in 15 digs.

The Bears wrap up SUNYAC play tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. when they host SUNY New Paltz.
