Bears fall to Saints in OT, 60-55

CANTON, N.Y.—St. Lawrence University (2-0) held on to defeat the SUNY Potsdam women's basketball team (0-2) 60-55 in overtime.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Saints raced out to a 14-6 lead in the first quarter, but the Bears charged back with a 14-5 run to lead 20-19 after 10 minutes. Senior guard Mikayla Shipley (North Chili, N.Y./Churchville-Chili) scored nine points in the first.
  • Potsdam edged SLU 13-11 in the second quarter and took a 33-30 edge into the half. Senior guard Barbara Bruno (Bronx, N.Y./Brooklyn High School for Law and Technology) scored seven points and senior forward Jenna Cotter (Johnson City, N.Y./Susquehanna Valley) netted the other six.
  • The low scoring third quarter was an 8-8 draw, with the Bears holding a 41-38 lead.
  • The Saints finally pulled in front with about six minutes to go, but the Bears battled back to tie the contest on a Cotter jumper and force overtime. SLU outscored the Bears 13-10 in the fourth but the contest was even at 51-51 after 40 minutes.  
  • The Saints outscored the Bears 9-4 in the extra five minutes to claim the 60-55 win.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Potsdam shot 29.7-percent from the floor and held SLU to just 25-percent.
  • The Saints finished with a 51-48 edge on the glass.
  • Cotter led the Bears with 16 points, five rebounds and three blocks.
  • Bruno finished with 15 points and 13 boards for first double-double of her career.
  • Shipley had 12 points and five rebounds.
  • Emily Flynn led SLU with 24 points, 15 rebounds and two blocks.
 
WHAT'S NEXT?
The Bears are back in action on Friday at 7:30 p.m. when they face Utica University in the first round of the Plattsburgh Holiday Inn Express Cardinal Classic.
