MORRISVILLE, N.Y.—The six-seeded SUNY Potsdam women's volleyball team (14-10) pushed third-seeded Morrisville State (15-11) to the brink before falling 3-2 in the first round of the SUNYAC Playoffs on Tuesday night.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Mustangs pulled away late for a 25-17 win in set one. Senior outside hitter Alyssa Adams (Jamestown, N.Y./Randolph) had four kills in the set.
- The Bears opened set two on an 11-0 run and flattened Morrisville 25-9 to even the match. Adams had three more kills, while senior captain Megan Henry (Candor, N.Y./Candor) and sophomore outside hitter Emily Prest (Averill Park, N.Y./Averill Park) each had two.
- The Mustangs raced out to a 9-3 lead in set three. However, Potsdam surged back to tie at 16-16 before taking the set 26-24. Adams led the charge with seven kills and Henry was right behind with six more.
- Morrisville rallied with a 25-21 win in set four to get even. Henry had four kills.
- The Bears led 11-7 in set five, but the Mustangs answered with a 7-0 for a 14-11 advantage. A Potsdam 4-0 run made it 15-14, but Morrisville claimed the match with a 3-0 run and a 17-15 victory. Henry had six more kills in the fifth.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Adams finished with 19 kills, 17 digs, four blocks and an ace.
- Henry had 18 kills, four digs an ace and 1.5 blocks.
- Junior setter Sophia Layer (Potsdam, N.Y./Potsdam) registered 32 assists and 16 digs.
- Sophomore setter Rachel Madore (Peru, N.Y./Peru) contributed seven assists and 14 digs.
- Emily Huppee led the Mustangs with 36 kills, 12 digs and two aces.
The contest marks the close of the Bears season, their second winning campaign in the last three years.
