Thoroughbreds overpower Bears

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.—Skidmore College (2-2) defeated the SUNY Potsdam men's basketball team (0-4) 83-67 on Wednesday night.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Sophomore guard Mohammad Sylla (Bronx, N.Y./Darrow) gave the Bears a 9-8 lead at 16:37, but the Thoroughbreds answered with a 19-2 run to seize control of the contest.
  • Skidmore led 49-32 at the half. Sylla scored 13 points in the first half and sophomore guard Nicholas Cortez (Harlem, N.Y./La Salle Academy) scored 10 points.
  • The Bears started the second half on a 19-11 run to close within 60-51 at 12:14. Senior guard Walter deFreitas (Brooklyn, N.Y./Xaverian) scored seven of the points during the stretch and senior forward Parker Kelly (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Beekmantown) had six.
  •  Skidmore then pulled away for the 83-67 victory.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • The Thoroughbreds shot 47.8-percent from the floor to the Bears' 36.7.
  • Skidmore had a 50-28 advantage on the boards.
  • Sylla finished with 22 points and four rebounds.
  • Cortez had 13 points, six boards and four assists.
  • Kelly and deFreitas each contributed 11 points and four and five rebounds, respectively.
  • Charlie Fantom led Skidmore with 18 points and seven rebounds.

Potsdam is back in action on Tuesday when the Bears head across town to take on Clarkson University at 5 p.m.
