ROCHESTER, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam men's basketball team (0-2) battled back late, before SUNY Cortland (1-1) held on for the 94-83 win. The contest was the Nazareth College Mike Daley Memorial Tournament consolation game.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Red Dragons pulled away from the Bears in the first half with a 37-22 run over the final 13 minutes to build a 52-35 lead at the break.
- Cortland was red hot from the floor in the first 20 minutes, shooting 55.9-percent.
- A 3-pointer from Gaige Armbrewster gave Cortland its biggest lead of the game, 68-47, with 12:42 to go in the half.
- The Bears responded with a 33-20 stretch to close within 88-80 at the 0:54 mark, capped by a three from sophomore guard Erik Wall (Syracuse, N.Y./Bishop Grimes).
- The Red Dragons then put the game away at the free-throw line.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Cortland shot 46.4-percent from the floor and Potsdam hit 40.3-percent of its shots.
- The Red Dragons controlled the glass by a 51-35 count.
- Sophomore guard Mohammad Sylla (Bronx, N.Y./Darrow) led the Bears with 19 points, seven rebounds and four assists.
- Senior guard Walter deFreitas (Brooklyn, N.Y./Xavarian) scored 18 points and grabbed five boards.
- Sophomore guard Nicholas Cortez (Harlem, N.Y./La Salle Academy) had 16 points and six rebounds.
- Senior forward Parker Kelly (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Beekmantown) contributed 14 points and eight boards.
- Kendall Arcuri paced the Red Dragons with 23 points and 10 rebounds.
