Huestis sinks game-winning three as Bears edge Red Dragons, 86-84

POTSDAM, N.Y. – Senior guard Colton Huestis (Ticonderoga, N.Y./Ticonderoga) nailed the game-winning 3-pointer to lift the SUNY Potsdam men's basketball team (4-21, 3-14 SUNYAC) over SUNY Oneonta (12-13, 9-8 SUNYAC) 86-84 on Bear Pride Night. Huestis paced the Bears with 32 points on 61-percent shooting from the field.

Potsdam started the game on a 16-6 run that ended at the 14:46 mark in the first half. Huestis scored seven points in the run. After senior guard Isaac Oduro Jr. (Jamaica, N.Y./Christ the King) made an unassisted jumper at 14:18, the Red Dragons routed an 8-0 run of their own to close the Potsdam lead 19-16 with 11:58 to go. At the 7:50 mark, freshman guard Daniel Penubothula (Valley Stream, N.Y./Valley Stream Central) hit a 3-point shot off an assist from senior guard Graham Wooden (Oneonta, N.Y./Oneonta) to tie the game 30-30. Both teams traded baskets over the following minute until the Bears scored three straight baskets to give themselves a 38-32 advantage with 4:03 remaining. Oduro Jr. and freshman guard Nicholas Cortez (New York, N.Y./Forest Hills) both made layups while junior forward Parker Kelly (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Beekmantown) netted two free throws to cap the run. With 1:50 to go in the first half, Red Dragons junior guard Caleb Brown (Brooklyn, N.Y./Uncommon Charter) converted an old-fashioned three-point play to go ahead of Potsdam 39-38. Oduro scored one last layup with 42 seconds left as Oneonta took a 41-40 edge into the break.

The Red Dragons opened the second half on a 19-9 run to extend their lead 60-49 at the 15:46 mark, their largest of the evening. Thirty seconds later, Huestis made a layup to spark a 12-0 Bears run to overtake the Red Dragons 61-60 with 12:35 to go. Huestis scored six points and Kelly scored four points during the run. After a back-and-forth contest over the next three minutes, junior guard Jeff Williamson (Brooklyn, N.Y./Christ the King) sank a 3-pointer off a find from Cortez to give the Bears a 70-66 lead with 9:09 remaining. Sophomore guard Elijah Castillo (Bronx, N.Y./St. Raymonds) made an offensive putback for the Red Dragons at 5:59 to tie the game 72-72. Coming out of a timeout, Kelly nailed a 3-point shot on a hand-off from Williamson to go ahead of Oneonta 75-72 at the 5:38 mark. With 2:50 remaining, Wooden scored a fastbreak layup as the Red Dragons took a one-point lead 80-79. Wooden scored another basket to extend the Oneonta lead 82-79 with 1:50 remaining. Potsdam answered the Red Dragon surge by scoring the next two baskets to take a one-point 83-82 lead with 30 seconds to go in the game. Kelly managed the go-ahead layup with a helper from Huestis. Despite ear-piercing shouts from the Maxcy faithful, Castillo sank two clutch free-throws from the charity stripe to give the Red Dragons an 84-83 edge with 26 seconds remaining. After a missed jump shot from Oduro Jr. with 11 seconds on the clock, the Bears were forced to foul junior forward Xavier Hill (Johnson City, N.Y./Johnson City) and put him to the line for two shots. After Hill missed both free throws, Oduro Jr. passed the ball up to Huestis who sank the game-winning 3-pointer with five seconds to go as the Maxcy faithful exploded with excitement. Castillo had one more chance with one second remaining but could not convert as the Bears captured a two-point victory over the Red Dragons at home.

Kelly had 17 points, seven rebounds, and three assists while Williamson registered 16 points, seven rebounds, with four assists. Oduro Jr. scored 14 points and Cortez ended the evening with seven points and seven rebounds for Potsdam.

Castillo led the Red Dragons with 21 points and Wooden posted 13 points. Hill registered an 11 point and 15 rebound double-double to round out the leaders for Oneonta.

The Bears scored 52 points in the paint tonight and converted 18 points off Oneonta turnovers.

The Bears are back in action tomorrow as they face SUNY New Paltz at 4 p.m. on Senior Day.
