POTSDAM, N.Y.—Senior assistant captain
Jack Loran (Massena, N.Y./New England Wolves) scored two goals as the SUNY Potsdam men's hockey team (7-17-1, 4-11-1 SUNYAC) completed the season sweep of SUNY Fredonia (7-1-1, 4-11-0) with a 4-2 win on Bear Pride Night. Junior assistant captain
Drew Rose (Brasher Falls, N.Y./Utica Jr. Comets) and freshman forward
Will O'Brien (Jefferson Hills, N.Y./HC Rhode Island) also scored for the Bears. Freshman goalie
Lenny Perno (Rochester, N.Y./Richmond Generals) made 33 saves for his fifth career win.
Senior forward Jake Blackwell (Hamden, Conn/Boston Rangers) opened the scoring at 15:15 of the first period to give Fredonia a 1-0 lead. The Blue Devils also had the only power play of the opening 20 minutes.
Loran tied the game at 9:56 of the second period. He picked up a loose puck and beat Fredonia senior goalie Logan Dyck (Calgary, Alberta/Notre Dame Hounds) for a shorthanded marker. The teams traded unsuccessful man advantages in the second period and were even after 40 minutes.
Four goals were scored in the third period. Rose scored a power-play goal from the left point at 8:20 to give Potsdam the lead for good. Sophomore assistant captain
Mason Hoehn (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Richmond Generals) and sophomore forward
Mathieu Parent (Kapuskasing, Ontario/Renfrew Wolves) assisted on the goal. Just one minute later, O'Brien solved Dyck with an odd-man rush goal on helpers form Parent and freshman defenseman
Eli Doughart-Wood (St. Louis, Mo./Navan Grads). At 12:11, Fredonia answered with a goal from senior forward David Sudbrink (Nolesville, Tenn./Ogden Mustangs) to close the gap to one. Dyck was pulled for an extra attacker with 1:59 left. Loran sealed the win with an empty-netter with 4.9 seconds on the clock.
Dyck finished with 23 saves. The Blue Devils were 0-for-3 on the power play and the Bears were 1-for-4.
A Potsdam win over Buffalo State tomorrow night combined with a Plattsburgh victory over Fredonia would propel the Bears back into the postseason.
Potsdam hosts the Bengals at 7 p.m. tomorrow and will honor its seniors following the contest.
