POTSDAM, N.Y.—No. 15 SUNY Cortland (17-4-2, 12-3-1 SUNYAC) defeated the SUNY Potsdam women's hockey team (9-11, 5-9) 5-0 on Saturday afternoon.
The Red Dragons scored twice in the first period. They broke through on a 4-on-3 power play. Junior forward Mia Hlasnick (Olean, N.Y./Niagara Jr. Purple Eagles) roofed a shot from the slot at 12:30 to make it 1-0. With 56 seconds left in the period, freshman forward Drew Kopek (Rome, N.Y./Syracuse Valley Eagles) scored on a low shot from the right faceoff circle. Cortland led 2-0 after one.
The Red Dragons added a third goal at 8:25 of the second period. Freshman forward Katie Mahoney (Toronto, Ontario/Toronto Leaside) tipped a shot from the left point past Bears senior goalie
Ellie Zurfluh (Arvada, Colo./Team Colorado).
Penalty trouble hurt the Bears in the third period. Three consecutive penalties allowed Cortland to pad its lead. Potsdam killed the first two, but graduate student forward Dany Donegan (Cicero, N.Y./Syracuse Nationals) made it 4-0 at 13:18 with a shot from the left faceoff circle. Senior defenseman Kait Bourgeois (Cobden, Ontario/Ottawa Thunder Midget A) capped the scoring at 17:38 with a shot from the right point.
Zurfluh finished with 31 stops, while junior goalie Molly Goergon (Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie) stopped 19 shots for the shutout.
Cortland was 2-for-7 on the power play and Potsdam was 0-for-2.
The Bears are back in action next Friday when they head to No. 3 Plattsburgh State for a 7 p.m. showdown.
