Blue Devils outpace Bears, 84-77

FREDONIA, N.Y. – The SUNY Potsdam men's basketball team (3-20, 2-13 SUNYAC) fell to SUNY Fredonia (7-16, 4-11 SUNYAC) on the road 84-77. Senior guard Colton Huestis (Ticonderoga, N.Y./Ticonderoga) paced the Bears with 26 points while freshman guard Nicholas Cortez (New York, N.Y./Forest Hills) complimented his teammate with a 17-point performance.

Junior guard Jeff Williamson (Brooklyn, N.Y./Christ the King) got the Bears on the board with a floater at 19:06. Fredonia answered quickly, scoring the next four points when Huestis answered with a 5-0 run to put Potsdam up 7-4 with 17:15 to go. Huestis sank a 3-pointer off an assist from junior forward Kawar Singh (Queens, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) and made a close layup to give the Bears the lead. The Blue Devils countered with an 8-0 run to jump ahead of Potsdam 12-7 with 15:40 remaining. The Bears overtook Fredonia 13-12 at the 13:39 mark when Huestis nailed his second 3-pointer of the game off a helper from senior guard Isaac Oduro Jr. (Jamaica, N.Y./Christ the King). Isaiah Youngquist netted two 3-pointers in the following three minutes as the Blue Devils routed a 9-0 run to go ahead 24-15 with 9:56 to go. At 7:48, Cortez nailed a 3-pointer and junior forward Parker Kelly (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Beekmantown) made a long-range three on the following possession to cut the Fredonia lead 27-23. Four different players scored for Potsdam in the remaining six minutes, but the Blue Devils took the 41-34 advantage into the break.

Two minutes into the second half, Kelly made a contested layup to complete the old-fashioned three-point play as Potsdam trailed Fredonia 44-37. Starting at the 14:09 mark, the Bears went on a 9-0 run to fight their way back to a six-point deficit, 56-50, with 11:05 remaining. Singh scored five points throughout the run. Despite cutting Fredonia's lead to seven points two more times in the remaining ten minutes, the Blue Devils handled the pressure and held off the Bears for their seventh victory of the season.

Williamson scored 10 points while Kelly chipped in eight points and dished out four assists. Singh grabbed a team-high nine rebounds and swatted away three shots for Potsdam.

Tyrese Fuller led the Blue Devils with 18 points and Keenan Roberts, Jr. and Malik Jemison registered 17 and 16 points, respectively.

The Bears are back in action tomorrow when they travel to face Buffalo State for a 4 p.m. matchup with the Bengals to conclude their Western New York road trip.
