Lakers rough up Bears

OSWEGO, N.Y.—Oswego State (15-7-1, 11-3 SUNYAC) scored six goals in the third period to defeat the SUNY Potsdam men's hockey team (6-15-1, 3-10) 9-0 on Saturday night.
 
The Lakers generated heavy pressure in the first period. They outshot the Bears 17-6, but freshman goalie Lenny Perno (Rochester, N.Y./Richmond Generals) and his defense held. The contest was scoreless after one.
 
Oswego continued to press in the second, scoring three goals. Perno stopped the first three shots, but the Lakers scored on the fourth. Trent Grimshaw made it 1-0 at 2:58. Two minutes later, Potsdam was called for roughing and Oswego capitalized. At 6:17, Tyler Flack doubled the advantage. At 8:08, Matt McQuade scored the contest's third goal. The teams each had one other unsuccessful power play in the period. Perno stopped 18 more shots. Potsdam was down 3-0 after 40 minutes.
 
The Lakers broke the game open with five goals in the first 7:42 of the third period. McQuade notched his second of the contest just 44 seconds in. Shane Bull struck at 3:16 and Thomas Rocco made it 6-0 at 5:09. Flack buried his second at 7:25 and Bull did the same just 17 seconds later. Oswego wasn't finished. McQuade completed his hat trick at 15:39, making it 9-0.
 
Brandon Milberg made 22 saves to earn the shutout. Perno finished with a career-high 48 stops. Oswego was 1-for-2 on the power play and Potsdam was 0-for-1.
 
The Bears head to SUNY Cortland tomorrow for a 5 p.m. contest.
