FREDONIA, N.Y.—SUNY Fredonia (11-11, 6-9 SUNYAC) used a first quarter run to separate itself from the SUNY Potsdam women's basketball team (7-14, 3-12) and held on for a 60-48 win on Friday night. Graduate student forward
Jakia Howard (Syracuse, N.Y./Nottingham) led the Bears with her 12th double-double of the season with 18 points and 11 boards.
The Blue Devils started strong, outscoring Potsdam 7-2 in the first two minutes. A three from junior guard
Carley Hill (Essex, Vt./Rice Memorial) and a layup from Howard got the Bears within 9-7 at 6:56. Fredonia then closed the quarter on a 16-5 run and led 25-12 after 10 minutes. Junior guard
Barbara Bruno (Bronx, N.Y./Brooklyn High School for Law and Technology) scored five points in the first and Howard had four.
The Blue Devils started the second quarter with an 8-2 run to open up a 33-14 lead at the 8:35 mark. The Bears trimmed the lead slightly, but were down 39-24 at the break. Howard added nine more points in the second.
Potsdam outscored the hosts 14-12 in the third quarter, but couldn't get within in 10 and trailed 51-38 through 30 minutes. Junior guard
Xy'El Bradford (Syracuse, N.Y./Syracuse Academy of Science) had four points and Hill and Bruno scored three each.
The was very little scoring through the first half of the fourth. The only point came on a free throw from junior forward
Jenna Cotter (Johnson City, N.Y./Susquehanna Valley). A layup from Howard at 1:35 closed the gap to 10 a final time, 55-45. However, the Blue Devils answered with a 3-pointer and jumper to expand the lead back to 15. Howard and Cotter scored the last three points of the contest before running out time in the 60-48 final.
Bruno finished with nine points and three boards. Hill and Bradford each scored six.
Allie Wandell had 17 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Blue Devils. Renee Park scored 12 points. Caitlin Snyder and Grace Alexander contributed nine and eight points, respectively.
Howard now has 1,159 points in her career. She needs 55 points in her last three games to catch former teammate
Dyamon Hunter '23 for second place on the program's all-time scoring list. Howard has also brought her rebounding total to 475, surpassing Bears Hall of Famer Karen Burns Dandrow '91 for second place in that category. She's 98 rebounds behind hall of famer Cortney Poirier-Graney '10 for first place.
The Bears are back in action tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m. when the head to Buffalo State.
