POTSDAM, N.Y.—Plattsburgh State (4-11, 3-6 SUNYAC) took an early lead and held on for a 12-7 win over the SUNY Potsdam women's lacrosse team (4-10, 1-8 SUNYAC) in the final contest of the season.
Graduate student attack
Anita Reitano (Averill Park, N.Y./Averill Park) led the Bears with five points on three goals and two assists. She closes her career with the program record of 234 points. She ranks second in goals (144) and assists (90) and first in man-up goals (17) and free-position goals (40).
Junior attack
Mallory Marks (Brownville, N.Y./General Brown) scored twice for Potsdam and junior midfielder
Tessa Pierce (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga Springs) and senior captain
Lindsey LaDue (Massena, N.Y./Massena) also scored.
The Cardinals scored twice in the contest's first 4:21, with the tallies coming from sophomore attack Cynthia Barnosky (Shirley, N.Y./William Floyd) and junior attack Maddy Garcia (New Paltz, N.Y./New Paltz). Reitano got the Bears on the board at 9:56 and then set up Marks for a man-up marker at 9:16 to tie the score. Plattsburgh responded with a 6-0 run, including three to end the first quarter up 5-2. Sophomore midfielder Taya Balfour (Rome, N.Y./Rome Free Academy) scored a man-up goal at 3:45, Garcia netted her second at 3:04 and junior midfielder Caitlin Nash (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) struck at 1:18.
Plattsburgh got the first three of the second quarter from sophomore attack Erica Dickinson (Yaphank, N.Y./Bellport), sophomore midfielder Nicole Resnick (Latham, N.Y./Shaker) and Garcia. The Cardinals were up 8-2 at 4:33. Reitano assisted on LaDue's goal at 1:51 and Potsdam was down five at the half.
Pierce made it 8-4 25 seconds into the third quarter, but the Bears couldn't get any closer. Barnosky and Balfour got the next two goals for a 10-4 advantage after 45 minutes.
Reitano got her second goal at 13:50 of the four quarter, but again the Cardinals answered with two from Barnosky and junior midfielder Rachel LaMar (Ballston Lake, N.Y./Shenendehowa) to extend the lead to seven. Marks and Reitano got the final goals of the contest for the 12-7 decision.
Sophomore goalie
Jane Olszewski (Thornwood, N.Y./Westlake) allowed eight goals and made six saves in 32:33. Sophomore
Olivia Minarich (Albany, N.Y./Albany) allowed three goals in the second quarter and freshman
Allyson Bruns (Oswego, N.Y./Oswego) stopped two shots and allowed a goal in the last 12:27.
Barnosky led all scorers with eight points on three goals and five assists. Garcia scored three times. In goal, senior Lila Nease (Lake Forest, Calif./El Toro) stopped 13 shots for the win.
